Rolled edge?
Good morning all,
I have Dovo Bismarck 2, 6/8" that I purchased from SRD. I've shaved approx. 4 times with it, the 4th. being this morning. However, the tang feels quite different from that of any of my other razors, it's "shoulderless", which has been causing me some grief when stropping, as the feel is different and i'm having a difficult time keeping the blade flat. This morning, the razor barely cut. I had to put it down, and finish with a different razor, still a Dovo, but a "shouldered" model, with file jimps on both top and bottom. Have I rolled the edge due to improper stropping? And if so, is a diamond-treated felt on a paddle strop enough to correct it? I also have a naniwa 12K stone...any advice is greatly appreciated. As always, Thanks !!
Nick.

You can rolled or dulled the edge with improper stropping. In your place I'd tried to correct on paddle strop. If it's not help try 12k stone, as it's not your single razor you can make a little experiment with it. Anyway you can't make much worse on 12K stone, if nothing helps send it back for honing

Thanked: 13245Most of the time unless you really monkey bumped the stropping (Only you can answer that) the damage you did stropping can be fixed with stropping...
Paste, linen, and leather should fix it, or maybe even just linen and leather...
Take a good look at the edge before you start, look for a sparkle at the very edge, that is a telltale of a rough edge (Rolled) and see if that sparkle dissapers after stropping correctly... Laying the strop along the edge of a table or counter until you learn the flip with that razor will help...

I don't notice the "sparkle" that you mentioned. Could it be that I simply dulled the edge? I know that I did nick the strop with the blade, and then this morning it didnt cut worth a crap! I have the SRD modular paddle strop, and I've treated the hard felt with the diamond spray. Should I start with a few laps on that, or on the naniwa 12 k?

Thanked: 13245You want to start with the least first,,,
Try 50 linen 100 leather and pay attention to the stropping
not good enough????
Try 10-15 Diamond 50 linen 100 leather
still not good enough ???
20 laps naniwa 12k, 50 linen 100 leather
After all that, if it still doesn't shave it needs a honing
ps: Lynn hones without tape, if you know how to hone then hone without tape also, if you are brand new to honing then use 1 layer of tape and that will get you right to the very edge...Last edited by gssixgun; 04-09-2012 at 03:04 PM.

If it needs honing, could that be accomplished with a Norton 4k/8k followed by the Naniwa 12 k?

Thanked: 13245LOL Why am I now getting the impression that you know something yer not telling us
But to answer your question YES !!! a 4-8-12 set up can hone any razor to shaving nirvana unless there is serious damage that would take a 1k and even that is just a time difference...
Search JaNorton and read and watch some of the stuff in that thread, it is stocked full of info for you...

But again start light first....Last edited by gssixgun; 04-09-2012 at 03:15 PM.
