'magnetic' razor steel
I purchased an H Eicker & sohne 75 biedermeier of the bay and discovered an etching on the blade saying 'Magnetic'. I thought it was just a sales gimmick, and I was comparing the blade to the size of my 51 Biedermeier and they got a little too close to each other and a felt a light but sudden tug and the razors' spines clinked together! I'm wondering, has anyone seen this before? And does anyone know why they would do this?

"Magnetic" razor were a sales gimmick.. like magnetic bracelets and shoe inserts today. i have several magnetic blades depending on how strong the magnetism is it could make honing messy... think of the metal filings sticking to the edge. Griffin razors are known for their excellent "carbo-magnetic"
you can demagnetize them with a simple video/audio tape eraser.

Gimmick, I would say not! If you look at the long term storage of an ferrous hulled ship you will see that one of the way that corrosion is held to a minimum is by a slight electrical charge being placed through the hull. The magnetizing the blade was an wary attempt at doing the same for razors. Has yours rusted since you've gotten it?

Alsothey guy who sold it to you could have used a magnet to hold it still. You can get 500 lb magnets from Harbor frieght for very cheap, and the make great holding jigs... Much cheaper than a vice.

not since i got them, removed the rust and cleaned them up but i attribute that to mineral oil and proper storage... the griffons do hone up nice with very little filing issues. probably all depends on how magnetized they were. perhaps your theory works better in salt water and involves a zinc anode.
here is an ancient thread http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...-magnetic.html and another http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...-magnetic.html
and if magnetism was so good for a razor then every carbon steel razor made after the discovery would have been magnetized.
Nuntits, sorry for the

Harbor Fright has some very nice small Ceramic Magnets. Inexpensive. Fairly strong. Keep a few in a bowl with my partially opened 5 packs of DE's. Holds them in place at the least.

Thanked: 2027Actually using an Electrical charge on ships hulls just inhibits animal (barnicles) growth.
Has nothing to due with magnetism.

They also used to run current through the hulls of ships during WWII to cancel the magnetism This was done to foil the triggers on mines.

So, that solves the mystery ! Not only will they not rust if you use magnets; they also will not get barnacles!! Could one ask for more?? Magnets are Good.(:-) for 2Bucks you can't go wrong.
