Hi DC, this is a UK company that i've used in the past for various items, and they always carry a nice supply of burr stabilized wood, most importantly very well priced as well. And i have noticed also you describe the wood as burl, and in the UK we call it burr.

HAHAHA, yep, you are right, I was mistaken. A bell jar is completly a viable vacuum chamber ( had forgotten at one point thats all anyone had, I have use one for investment casting in college donno how it slipped my mind), . LOL, I saw the pickle jar the dude in the video was using and immediately thought you meant BALL JAR, my bad!

    Jamie.
Im sure there are people who call it all sorts, and Ive seen it spelled burrel, berl, and many other strange ways. Most the world, including my suppliers in South east Asia, Africa, and Australia all call it Burl. (and you should hear some of the people in Laos struggle with it, Burl is a cruel word for some non-English speaking Asians to have to attempt) In the business, if you are dealing with people who supply the stuff, if you call it burr, they will think you are mis-pronouncing it. (if you are looking for it on google, you are better off searching for burl wood, far more results)

Its actually short for "burling" which is descriptive of the slow action of the tree growth as the grain spins, past tense (an referring to finished product) "burled wood", shortened to "burlwood."

So Im not sure where some brits got the idea to call it a burr. Just a few English websites and Uk based ebay sellers (and wikipedia, not the most trustworthy source) are the only places I see it called burr (but not all). I guess y'all invented the language, so you can do whatever you want to it ;-). Personally I think the other forms of the word would sound strange (burred, burring), just doesn't roll off the tongue well.

You do pronounce aluminum like it rhymes with condominium, so I digress... LOL The english language is confusing no matter who speaks it, and Im sure you can point out a few American nuances that you think are strange as well .

(ps celticcrusader, let me know if you havent gotten my pms, Ive tried a few times and Im not sure if its working)

Burls are amazing things. As crude as it may sound burls are sort of a cancer on a tree,an area of aberant uncontrolled growth.
I used to hunt Burl up in the local Santa Cruz Mountains,This one I cut and seasoned for no less than 20 yrs,Is Madrone, a real PITA to turn.
