Thanked: 6I agree that honing plays a crucial role in getting a razor to its optimal sharpness. That said, the aforementioned Klaas attains a level of sharpness beyond that of my other razors. I think it has to do with blade geometry and the steel: the blade is wafer thin yet stone hard, cutting at an extremely acute angle.
BTW, what's the grind on those Mappin & Webbs?

Thanked: 6Responses have been interesting: excluding the Mappin & Webb and the Wosty, which may be wedge grinds, it would appear that all the other blades mentioned have been full hollows. This sort of gibes with my own experience: wedge grinds, while more comfortable shavers and great for lopping off thick growth, don't seem to cut quite as close on the final passes.

Actually, my Bismark is a pre-Dovo.No worked spine. It's an extra hollow with a spike point.

You have to consider some of the wedge grinds out there have been old, rusted, badly honed relics that have been restored.. The grind is the last thing that influences sharpness. Your skill level & how the edge is honed plays a bigger part & as has been said many times, the steel.
I have honed & tested a few wedges that gave me an equally close shave to other razors. I choose not to own one as I find them heavy & clumsy but some of the smaller ones have made me think twice.
You are lucky to have a good razor that is no doubt well honed but your stubble has no idea what grind it is.
