Thanked: 0Steel in Double Duck
I've just come into possession of a satinedge and I'm having a hard time getting an edge on it. Does anybody know the type of steel and how hard it is?

Thanked: 346It's solingen steel. What condition was it when you got it? Some old razors have rotten steel at the tip of the bevel because of internal oxidation (the fin and end of the bevel is exposed to oxygen on three sides). It may just need some more laps on the 4k to expose the better steel underneath.

I also have a Satinedge that I just can't seem to get to take an edge. I think some razors just turn to crap over the years for various rasons. I could be wrong.

So I'm not the only one. Mine's gonna make it to e-bay.

Thanked: 346Or they were crap to begin with. Not every razor from those exalted times was great. It's just that most of the crap ones have been turned into woodworking tools since then.

Mine has seen quite a bit of honing time and it can shave but not as well as my other pieces in the rotation.

Thanked: 9well, the Satinedge I had for a while (7/8) gave me 2 of the the best (if scariest) shaves so far... I also have a 6/8 Goldedge, which is at the very top of my rotation...
and... drum roll: I got a Wonderedge (waiting to arrive) for 160 which I am looking forward to trying. I think we might be coming to more reasonable times for Wonderedges, as I let one go for under 80 due to bad pic, then another 9/16 for 115... I got mad they're so cheap and decided to actually bid on one. of course, with my luck I had to win mine for much more
Cheers

In all honesty the satinedge in my posession suffered some fire damage that may have messed up the temper. I'd be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but this one is going to get auctioned off.

Thanked: 0Guys,
Thanks for the quick and helpful inputs. I recently have done a
Torres and a Boker. The Double Duck sounds different going across the hone. Could be because I don't have the same edge drag. I'll check with a magnifier.
Illja,
On yours, I would think that if the fire was hot enough to alter the temper, the scales would be long gone. It would also make the blade less hard (Rockwell C) and therefore easier to hone but also less resistant to dulling. Just a thought.
Thanks again.
Rick
