The SR-like shave is what I'm looking for, so I think I'll go with the SS.

Just a reminder to those considering the Feather straight. The folding model is more forgiving than the Japanese (non-folding) style. This is primarily due to the ability to hold the correct angle during the shave. The Western style folding model definitely holds the angle more solidly, particularly when going against the grain. The round handle and light touch required of the Japanese model can tip up quickly and easily, resulting in an instant weeper. The Super blades are especially dangerous. These bad boys gave me a couple of weepers in 10 shaves that were as deep as I have gotten in 30 years of shaving. If you are new to SR shaving then I highly recommend the Feather folding model with the Pro blades - anything but the Supers!

The guy I talked about the DX said that he wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't mastered shaving with a straight. I have a year experience with a straight, so I think I'll feel comfortable with SS and Pro blades (not the supers).

I'll admit to trying only the Pro Guard blades in my Feather SS. I have all the other blades, but the shaves with the Pro Guards have been so forgiving and so smooth at the same time that I've seen no reason to try the others. The Pro Guards have little bumps near the edge that reduce the likelihood of cuts and scrapes. They don't eliminate the possibility. What eliminates that possibility, if you're careful with them, is using no pressure at all. You'll find that they are so sharp that there is no need for pressure at all. It won't feel like they are doing the job, that is, until you feel your face and see how smooth the shave is. I still prefer my regular straight razors most of the time, but that is not because they give me better shaves.
