FWIW, and I know that is absolutely nothing ... I don't agree with that conclusion. Reason being that I've yet to run into a razor that I cannot easily open be it a square, round or whatever point. Especially the old Sheffields with the large spines. OTOH, for those of us with the type of mustache that is trimmed below the schnoz the barber's notch ...... more correctly, according to some .... notch point , does make it significantly easier to manipulate in that area.

The mustache theory i dont agree with, picture 1 shows how easily it is to open razor in closed position, pic 2 shows a WB with a traditional barbers notch, and i just dont see any benefits from shaving around the mustache with that notch! but thats my opinion!

Very similar to what an old time Barber told me,without a qualm he said the notch was used to open the razor one handed using the pocket of his barbers smock.

hmm, I am a two-handed honer myself..but I thought the notch was for getting into the nostril area easier..ah, well, who knows , but I do like barbers notches. The one barber's notch razor I have is a serious pain in the ass to hone (it's an ebay razor.) I have yet to shave with it.

Is the term Barbers notch something recent?

Hey, I was wrong once once before ..... do you have a mustache .... and if you do, do you shave between the nose and the top of it ? For me a notch point .. hollow point or barber's notch by any other name is easier. YMMV.
