Great stuff,So what do you all think,why the reasons for large blades that barbers used back in the day.
Go's without saying they will shave no better than smaller blades.
As said in this thread,Lack of running water (sounds reasonable) invision barbers setting up shop in shanty towns,county fairs,Traveling barbers in makeshift tents during say the gold rush.
In a production shop setting where perhaps a barber was doing 30/40 shaves a day,are the big blades a more efficiant tool for the tasks?

I wouldn't be surprised if they figured as much as they had to be honed over and over the large ones would last that much longer. That is supposing they honed their own. You know these pictures we see of the traveling wagon with the guy who sharpened knives, scissors and household cutlery on a grinding wheel attached to his wagon. Could be that barbers were customers too. If that was the case all the more reason to have more steel to grind/hone.

Here is a 10/8 Robert Williams giraffe bone. Robert told me he thinks it was the 5th razor he made. Great shaver. Here is a 10/8 Joseph Rodgers that I honed a good 1/16 off of to get a chip out. So it was even wider than 10/8 at one time. Also a great shaver but neither of them see much action.
