Thanked: 0Looking for a new razor
So I got a Gemstar vintage restoration a while back (Solingen 5/8 full hollow if I'm not mistaken,) and I used it quite a few times. It's now too dull and dinged up to shave. I do plan to keep it and get the proper stones and strops for sharpening, but I'd also like to get a new razor. I was hoping you guys might be able to point me in the right direction.
I'd like something new this time. Possibly something with a wider blade. Something made of good steel capable of holding a good edge. I think I like the full hollow, but don't have anything else to compare it to, so I don't know for sure. I might start shaving every day, but a lot of the time I wait up to a couple weeks in between shaves. My beard is pretty thick and wirey. If possible I'd like my new razor to be shave-ready. Price range.....I dunno, couple hundred dollars maybe more?
Could you recommend some good current manufacturers and models?
What type of features should I look for based on my beard type and shaving schedule?
What are some good places to order from? I'm located in British Columbia, Canada.
What exactly do I need for sharpening? What kind of stones and strops do you recommend, and where can I get them?
Thanks!Last edited by kristopher; 11-21-2012 at 11:24 AM.

Kristopher,
I would recommend a TI Special Coiffeur in 6/8. It's a half hollow hefty blade that I am sure will handle the task.
As for a strop, I would suggest something that is 3 inches wide. A lapped Naniwa or Norton double sided stone should work well.

Thanked: 0How do you guys feel about Hart Steel razors?
Do you think their 6/8 quarter hollow would be a good choice?

Thanked: 116Finally I get to be the first person to point you in this direction: Rasiermesser Revisor razors.
They have incredible stuff in a variety of price points ranging from affordable to insanely expensive. Have fun looking through a few hundred razors

Kristopher,
I have heard great things about Hart razors. In fact a 6/8 or 7/8 quarter hollow is on my hit list.

My Dovo 6/8 has been a solid choice. You might want to run by the antique store and check their selection (unless you prefer new). They will sometimes have a couple diamonds hiding in the dimly lit and somewhat eery stores.
