Thread: Should I oil or vasiline my razor after every use?

Just wondering.

I use mineral oil on my razors after every use, with a Q-Tip. I live in Florida, humid, never a problem in 2 years, come February.

What about a rust preventer like break free or Kroil? I live in New Orleans so humidity is definitely a problem.

I say no, but many have their own way . I'm 12 miles from the ocean, mine stay on the bathroom sink. Oiled & wrapped in a linen handkerchief. My stored razors only have mineral oil on them & stay in a cigar box. Every 6 months I check them, never a blemish. I use Break free on my weapons, I have never used Kroil, so I can't give you advice on them.

As long as you completely wipe dry and strop your razor, plus as long as the storage is right you shouldn't have to worry about rust, I use 12 razors all stored together in a air tight box with one of these and never had an issue.

I use Ballisotl and it works great. It is food safe too.

I guess it all depends on usage and storage as already implied here. I tend not to oil any of my razors and after shaving I wipe them properly dry with some kitchen paper. The scales hardly ever get wet anymore, the way I shave, so there's no fear of water hiding in the pins. If I do accidentally wet the scales I blow them dry afterwards with a blow-dryer. My razors are stored in my wardrobe with all my clothes. Any humidity will first have a huge buffer of clothes to get into, before it gets into my closed box with razors. I'm in this thing for over two years now and haven't had a single rust or blemish problem. Just my experience for what it's worth.

Mineral oil works great and you can get it anywhere.

Carl , I've never heard of Eucalyptus oil for rust prevention on steel. Have you any research on it or was it just a successful experiment for you.
