I don't recall tape pulling gold wash off but I may not have noticed. If you take the tape you're going to put onto the spine, and apply it to a counter top or whatever, pull it off and then put it on the spine, it will remove some of the sticky from it. Might make it less prone to pull on the goldwash. Another thing that comes to mind, if you have any renaissance wax , give the blade a coat before you start. It might protect it some.

Thanked: 1936I've never had any to damage goldwash either. If you get tape adhesive left on the blade when you pull the tape off, use the tape to pull off any left over adhesive.

Re: Beautiful ern
I wouldn't risk it, I'd send it off for the first honing with no tape then maintain from there.
These guys put a lot less hone wear than we do.
Nice blade!
Eric.

That's the most beautiful Ern I've ever seen, congratulations! Dealing with a very old wedge that was flat I had to find something to allow me to hone it, and I discovered that a piece of plastic bent in two that is normally used to bind photocopies was satisfactory. Maybe that material can scratch the gold wash on your blade, but you could find some softer plastic with that shape:
The blade in the picture is not the actual one I honed with this device, it's just a handy ongoing project.

Beautiful ern
I am not sure what self amalgamating tape is, but maybe blue painters tape might work? Put the blue tape first and then place your electrical tape over it.
