Thanked: 5First symptoms of RAD
Been lingering and learning from here a little longer than a year just never posted till now. I started with a straight about a year ago with a fisherwerks? (i think the company is/ was called) that I picked up at an antique store then my great grandfather kindly honed it up for me and I've never looked back since.
But, as the title says I'm starting to feel the effects of RAD, whenever I see my razor on the shelf I can't help but think how lonely it looks, and I feel a good way to invest student finance is to give it a friend...
The thing is though I can't decide between 2 dovos, the special or the bismarck. Just wondering what people's opinions are about them and if the bismarck is worth that extra little bit of money. I know faces are unique and one person's gold may be another persons bronze so there's no definitive 'this one's better' type of thing, but isn't that what makes life interesting?

Yep..Sounds like RAD to me!!
I caught it BAD...I owned like 12 Straights before I could even shave ATG properly!! My rational is this: Shaving is something that I'm going to have to do for the rest of my life, so why not make it interesting??
ps...and just wait till you start honing....HAD is even worse!!-JP-

Thanked: 14Re: First symptoms of RAD
i was very disapointed today when a shop wouldnt sell an old straight to me because they were waiting on a licence
was in walker slatter in edingbugh if anyone is interested, the razor has a little bit of rust but not on the edge and i couldnt see any hone wear but there was a little damage to the scales.
if you post on here you are in the early stages of rad/bad and its too late for you.
if you lurk you might get lucky and not be affected

I just bought a Bismark about a month ago and I absolutely love it. I got the ebony handled one. It shaves very very well and is quite an eye catcher. I highly recommend it. I have RAD bad. I have about 15 now and most are vintage. I like to try the different steels and sizes and I can get them on the cheap. I have gotten pretty proficient honing on my Norton stones and am getting the HAD itch now, but not before I buy a custom or a 7/8 Hart.

Thanked: 5I only have a coticule that I use for touch ups at the minute, I'm yet to fully delve into the world of honing. It's the ebony i'm looking at and it's good to hear it sounds like a good shaver too. I'm just hoping I don't suffer from RAD that badly to end up with 12/ 15 or more razors, I'm beginning to see just how expensive this can be

Its not to bad if you know what you are looking for and commit to a maximum amount you are going to spend. My limit is 20 for the most part for razors off of ebay. I have picked up some excellent shavers that way cheap. Doing it this way is also a good way to learn how to hone. You do have to be careful and look for rust, frowns, cracks, etc. I also tend to stay away from the well known brands like Double Duck and the such on ebay. Here is a thread I started about my last acquisition and it is a magnificent shaver. Shaves every bit as good as my Bismark.

I've been using a straight for a week and already have 3 going on 4.
My new razor (other 2 are antiques) is a dovo special with tortoise. I chose it because it looked just right, not too plain, not too bling.
Honed by an old school barber in Newcastle it is fantastic.
RAD really is a problem, I'm personally driving my wife bonkers with it

Thanked: 1184Sounds like you are just on the verge of RAD. Unless you respond tomorrow saying you got BOTH.
And Dave "RAD really is a problem, I'm personally driving my wife bonkers with it "
Razors are to men like shoes or purses are to women. There is a post around here somewhere describing how that works. :<0)Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 5Never knew there was an old school barber in newcastle, may have to pay him a visit next time I'm over there. The only one's I've found that offer a straight shave use the shavette style razors
But unfortunately I can't afford both of them, so it's just one or the other. Just have to wait until I get paid on Monday. Then get the other one at some point in the future...
