    Default Very thin Griffon

    Hi,

a friend gave me a razor for Christmas (found it online somewhere). It's a Griffon with the numbers 21 written on the shank. It is used so will need cleaning and honing but what surprised me is the shape itself. I've never seen a razor that thin, so I even wonder if it's meant to shave at all (I guess the angle between the blade and skin would be very hard to control). What do you think about this razor, and have you ever seen one like that ?

Here's a photo with my other razors, both 5/8 for a comparison :

I have another question. The razor has a little rust on it, and I know for sure I don't want any of that in my blood. Is it possible to get completely rid of the rust and be safe or is it just a bad idea to shave with it at all ?

    Thanks !

I have seen razors that were factory made at 3/8, but never that thin. How thin the shank is looks like it was meant to be that thin unless the shank was ground down, but it looks like jimps on the bottom so I don't think that was the case. You could shave with it. I read somewhere that the thinner razors were used for the upper lip and detail work, but would shave anything else as well.

What is it? A 1/3 or even a 1/4? Would be interesting to see the how it is ground. Maybe it's for trimming moustaches or something. You can definitely clean it up safely. You'd be shocked by how much good razor can hide even under quite a lot of rust. (As long as edge is reasonable).

I don't know how much fun it would be to shave with such a thin razor . It'll fill up with lather really quickly. I have a 5/8 Griffon which is a very good shaver.

Indeed, the tang relationship indicates it is close to what it was made. A "moustache razor" to be shure! very cool!
    Give it a go!

Thanks for you quick responses !

I haven't been able to make a sharp photo (taking them with my cell) but here's what I could manage to show how it is ground.

I will definitely try to clean it up and test it quickly, probably this week end. I was almost ready to think of it as a collecting razor... We'll see !

That's really cool, I like it! I wonder what it'd be like to shave with? I mean your whole face? Let us know!

Looks to me like it might be a 'nose picker'. Keep that nose hair short

I measured about 0.7 cm, so that would make it a 1/4 inch. And I'd say 2.8 in from head to shoulder.

I just read about cell rot. Maybe the rust on this Griffon is from that ? How can I be sure, and if it is and I need to get rid of the scales, how can I find new scales that small ?
