Thread: Cocobolo scales

i think the look of cocobolo wood is awesome, but i haven't seen anyone use this wood in making scales for straight razors. i'm sure custom scales could be made, but do you guys know of any manufacturers who use this type of wood in making their razors? i'd absolutely love to get my hands on one if they're out there.

Jason made some lovely pieces. Just be careful as that wood can irritate the lungs if you don't wear a mask. I'll probably make a couple of sets for myself with it.

i'm not sure who jason is - does he still make razors with the cocobolo scales?

when you say that the wood irritates the lungs, you're only referring to the making process right? i can see how the sawdust might be an irritant, but not a finished product...

Jason's nickname is Toxik and he doesn't make razors but he does restore blades and put custom scales on them. He can probably accomodate your taste in blades as I'm sure he has quite a few of them lying around.
You are right about irritation. The dust that you generate from sanding the scales contains oils that are lung irritants but are great at protecting the finished product.

I have a razor with cocobolo scales. It's my favorite handle.

I actually haven't used cocobolo just yet. I have a pair of blanks I got from vlad a very very long time ago that I just haven't used yet. I just can't figure out which razor to use them on It's certainly a lovely wood tho, and the cuts vlad sent me have very nice figure too.

how is the quality of this razor/blade?

is there a difference between cocobolo and cocobolo diamondwood?

I think shavingshop is run by a member of our forums (forgot his name though). Having said that, those henckels friodurs are reputed to be great razors of some very hard steel. They may be more difficult to hone, but with hold a keen edge for some time.

But once you do put an edge on it, touchups are relatively easy. That's the only thing saving me from going postal on the W&B lol.
