Thanked: 43For $35 you can buy a much better razor than that.
You might have to wait on the mailman but it will be well worth it.
Good luck and great shaves to ya!

Thanked: 0Is this the DA I've read about? There seem to be multiple razors called DA. I thought the better ones were white-handled... I know this thing says DA on it, but I don't know what they usually look like. At any rate, my understanding was that they are decent starter straights.
Is it not possible to get a good shave from something like this? If it's not worth $35, what if I could talk him down to $20 or whatever? Or if I could get him to throw in some soap/strop/etc? I'll strop for as long as it takes, if it means I can save a few bucks!

Confucius say, the thrill and excitement of the bargain is quickly eclipsed by the non performance and poor quality and ensuing disappointment and aggravation of the purchase to begin with.

there are sight unseen deals that cost the same for a better razor than that. but in the end it is your face, your money and your decision.
i'm in the don't get one category, i tried 4 of these years ago when you could get them cheap i got a shavable edge on one, one would hold an edge for about 5 shaves and the other 2 i could not get to work regardless of the hones i tried. you might have a much better experience.
enjoy,

Thanked: 247If you really want to save money and just really don't care about anything else. You can get a not shave ready GD off Ebay for 5 dollars with free shipping. I don't know what having a razor honed costs though.
Botttom line is that there are better deals to be had.

Thanked: 3222I think I would listen to what the others have said and walk away. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to get a good shave from that razor is the general consensus. It is a false economy to get something like that but in the end it is your call, you may get lucky or not.

It looks like a Gold Dollar ($3.50) and 2 minutes with a Dremel (free). Save your money.

Thanked: 28I have picked up solingen and sheffield razors for that price, some of them shave ready even. I looked into the gold dollars and read the corresponding threads and decided that it's not worth the trouble at this stage considering I have barely just started learning how to hone.

Truth for life: Only rich people can afford to buy cheap things.
Just my opinion, but for less money you can pick up any of a large number of better razors. Close is always tempting, but that temptation can lead to folly.
The classifieds here, Larry at whipped dog, and any of the vendors here will never lead you wrong--this is their niche market. And those same dollars can serve you well spent elsewhere.
But, if you don't mind the gamble, you might get a razor that's had all the work done to it and works just fine. I knew a guy who had a Dodge Omni that was a terrible lemon. He traded it in, and the next couple that bought it drove the wheels off the thing with no problems whatsoever.
Flip a coin?
Peace,
Jim
