Thread: Razor Safety!

Never get careless, even for a minute.

I've got night shift with my FIL and he's being a bit restless tonight so I decided to hone the razors I'm putting in for the give away. I had just finished honing a nice Wostenholm, sheffield, when the dog knocked my water glass off the coffee table. I had the razor in my left and the glass was on my left. Instinctively I reached over with my right to try to catch it and instead sliced the ring finger on my right hand open to the bone.

To aleviate any fears of blood born pathogens (even though I'm clean and dd free ) I've taken the wostenholm out of the line up and replaced it with one of my clauss razors, much to my dislike. I really love my clauss razors .

Now I've got a gaping 2 inch cut on the top of my finger. I held it closed until I could get my wife awake to bandage it. It's burning like sixty and she's hounding me to go into the ER but the closet one is St Elizabeths and they ALWAYS seem to take 12 hours and more for any things that's not going to get them sued for procrastinating. I'd rather eat sewage than visit St. Elizabeth's heathcare center. I've got some catgut left over from when we ran the farm I'm thinking about trying. It's bigger than the standard suture used on humans but My FIL is always calling me a dog anyways .

The moral of the story kiddies. Safety first!

Wow, sorry to hear that. I can understand the ER thing... I've gone the self-patch route a few times as well (throwing knife in arm and framing nail through two fingers to name a couple) since I generally dislike hospitals. As long as nothing's broken and no nerve/tendon damage I generally just keep it clean, bandaged and antiseptic on it and stitch as necessary. Good luck with the healing.

I see I've trained your dog well. Now all I need to do is post as a newbie and beg for a Clauss razor. Mmmmm HHHHaaaaa Haaaaa!

i did similar a couple weeks back and ended up going to the ER.

becuase it is a perfect slice, no gash or tearing of the wound, all the ER did was use this superglue and glued it shut.

so try the same thing.. hold the wound together and glue it up with some CA or superglue. thats all that the ER is gonna do anyways and it will save ya a couple hundred bucks in bills. now if you need a tetnus shot, you may wanna go get that

oh, the outside heals together before the inside heals together. feels weird for a week or so pushing on it. you'll see

well the wife won't let me use superglue and I refuse to go to the e.r. This will be interesting. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't cross the knuckle. Oh well.

What's her problem with the superglue? In any case you can just use it, put some tape over it and by the time she finds out you've glued yourself up it's going to be too late for her to complain

Personally I think you should see a doc and get it sewn up right. The wound should be cleaned well and either stitches applied or skin bonded. I don't beleive they are using generic CA glue though. It would be fairly logical to think they are applying something more sterile.

No matter what you choose to do, I hope it heals quickly and smoothly for you.

Actually the hospitals are using a incredibly expensive medical CA glue that just happens to be made by the same company we get the cheep stuff from at the corner drugstore.

The real trick with deep cuts is the sterilization, making sue the wound is clean and all the cleaning agent itself is removed from the wound. Thats the nice thing about the ER if they clean it any infection is their fault, if you clean it and get infected later...

i accidentally cut myself with a razor blade a few months ago and the cut which my 16yr old expert opinion would only need a band-aid and a lot of pressure but my father insisted i go to the ER which i do not like and after sitting there for about 3 hours the doctor came in and put some super glue on it and it was fine (Even though it had stopped bleeding by then)
