After reading this thread I am intrigued after the Admirals stay in Canada where is he off to next? Maybe he can work is way to the Canadian west coast and then venture to Hawaii for a spell? Once here I can take him to Pearl Harbor and he can see his handiwork that brought the US into WW II and then the Battleship Missouri where after his death his country surrendered.

I don't think he would like going to Pearl. He was not in favor of attacking the U.S. he only went along with the superiors especially Tojo.

The good news: The Admiral has arrived in my fair city
The bad news: I'll have to wait until tomorrow to pick him up at the UPS depot
The other bad news: my delivery notice has an *insane* brokerage fee lsited. Will have to negotiate that down... Wish me luck.

No worries at all - it's a UPS issue, not a sender issue. Import, brokerage fees, blah, blah, blah...

Not to worry though. A lovely lady at the UPS call centre made over 1/2 of the fee disappear, so all is good.

I can happily report that The Admiral has arrived chez Cangooner in one piece, and is currently gazing across at the big maples in the park which are just starting to change colour. I think he likes it here.

He has had a long journey and I have had one hell of a long week, so I think we both deserve a rest tonight. Shave #1 tomorrow...

    Good afternoon gents!

I am happy to report that with shave 1 complete, I am still intact, still breathing, and looking forward to #2 tomorrow.

It took a little while to get used to handling the blade, but I have never had the opportunity to use a Japanese-style, or fixed-handle razor before, so that was no surprise. What was a surprise was just how maneuverable it was once I got used to it, and how that made getting into the tricky areas nice & easy.

I muted one of the pointy bits adjacent to the chip that coachschaller noted, but other than that just stropped it and shaved, in the end getting a really nice result.

Thank you again TBS! Although if I continue to enjoy this as much as I did on the first shave, I may be cursing you for adding a whole new category to my RAD.

    SOTD post here.

    'Evening gents,

Thought I'd give a bit of an update after a week of having the honour of welcoming The Admiral into my humble abode. I'm delighted to say that he seems to have settled in quite well with the English, German, French, Swedish, and Russian razors that he has met so far. Unfortunately my only Unitedstatesian blades are mid-restore at the moment, so they have not yet met. If I have some time this weekend, I might be able to get them acquainted.

So far it has been all good. It definitely takes some getting used to when first setting off, but in addition to kind of liking the fixed-handle style I think I may have discovered that Japanese steel agrees with me just as much as old Sheffield steel.

I think I'll hang on to my guest for a few more days, and then send him on his way.

    It has been fun!

Well, a bit of insanity at work, a short vacation, and Harrywally and I taking a couple of days to connect last week led to a little delay, but the time has come and it is with a heavy heart that I shall say goodbye to the Admiral tomorrow.

I noticed a bit of tugging a couple of shaves ago but a wee touch up on my Zulu Grey brought everything back into line and I think I had my best shave of all with this little guy tonight. It was a fine way to bid him farewell, and I can send him on knowing he's in fine shaving form.

A BIG thank you to TBS for putting this together. It has been an interesting introduction for me to the world of the fixed blade.

    Merci beaucoup!
