You win some, you lose some...
But this time, I WON!!!
So, I bought a Genco pyramid 7 off the bay the other day. Nuttin' fancy, plain black scales, 5/8, round tip full hollow ground. I bought it with the intention of swapping the scales with a nice set from a razor my mother-in-law destroyed (read: tried using a 100 year old straight razor to scrape gunk off of some glass on the advice of my five-year-old son).
I think I coughed up may $15 or so for the razor. From the pics in the auction, it had no real blemishes to speak of, save a very minor line right where the blade meets the scales towards the toe when closed. I figured it would be easy-peasy-lemon-squeezey to clean that up with some Flitz or Blue Magic and the razor might also require a little time on the Nortons. The seller seemed honest and had good feedback overall, but by the description in the auction, didn't seem to know much about straight razors.
So, the razor shows up and out of curiosity, as well as an attempt to get an idea of what work may be needed to make it shave ready, I sterilized the blade and made a pass on my forearm. Arm hairs were popped like Orville Redenbacher, albeit not extremely smooth. So, I stropped the blade with 50 linen and 75 leather passes, lathered up and shaved.
One of my best to date. No tugging. No irritation. Baby Butt Smooth all over. Oh, and I was on about a four day growth to boot.
I'm super curious if was a new old stock blade. It doesn't appear to have any hone wear.
Definitely worth the $15 and an extremely lucky find!"Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. That one is Obsession." -Roland Deschain of Gilead

Thanked: 1How does one win an auction for a SR for just $15?! All the auctions I have seen so far have ended for $30-40 bucks at least and that's the US. When you go to eBay UK it's more like 40-50GBP. Ah, lucky you! Great find.

The mother-in-law story just has that truthful sound to it; congrats on the find!

Haha, yeah, I got lucky on the price. It was listed as something other than geneva or genco.
Don't worry, the pics are coming... I'm waiting for my phone to charge up. I'll even post pics of the victim from "the glass incident". Needless to say, my mother in law got a stern talking to.
Oh, I was mistaken... the razor was a 4/8, which I'm not as partial to, but I like this one. There's just no denying that it gives a great shave, just like all my other genco's (80-90% of my razors are genco)."Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. Haha, sorry for the long wait fellas... Between a dead phone, celebrating Independence Day and having to take my wife in for an emergency gall bladder removal, things have been kinda crazy. I'll post the pics up when I get home this evening.
Unfortunately, however, the blade is getting some very dark spots in the midst of my shave. Of all the Genco's I have, I've never experienced this. I know some members have said something about this before, but I don't recall what it was off the top of my head, and haven't had the chance to look for the info."Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. Alright, as promised, here are the pics. First is the 7 pyramid (I also have a couple of 7N pyramids). You can see the spots on the back side of the blade. Finally, the victim of my mother-in-law's dingbattedness...
