Yes, they can be on quite solidly, esp the steel type as there may be rust underneath. light tapping toward the toe with a brass punch at the top,tang end of the spine with the toe on a wooden block....

You can get by with a lot of hand-sanding on...
You can get by with a lot of hand-sanding on these types. Go longitudinal with finer and up and down with more coarse.
