Well, the Shapton 1k certainly seems faster than my Norton. Had to rehone a razor that I dinged the edge on and got the bevel reset quicker than I expected.

If you have a good edge, I would just try using it like you would any other stone to begin with. Then you can experiment using the slurry stone. I don't even have a slurry stone for mine yet....

I would like a jig to cut -1/8" blanks with, but I think that setup would like be more difficult with smaller pieces like pen blanks.

That is an old razor and micarta wasn't used for them back then, to my knowledge.
That 'seam' around the edge is characteristic of leather scales.
