    Default ANZAC Day. April 25th

    Commemorating 100 years since the ANZAC (Australia & New Zealand Army Corps) arrived on the beach at Gallipoli

    * An old Bengall Razor that belonged to my grandfather (though not from military service)
    * A plain brush.
    * A hand mirror reflecting the NZ National War Memorial

    Nothing fancy would have been available to those who served.

    They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
    Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
    They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
    They fell with their faces to the foe.

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
    Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

    They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
    They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
    They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
    They shall sleep with honour as do we;
    Don't do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the paramedics!

    This post commemorates the 100th anniversary of the landing of the combined Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915. The razor I have chosen is a Bengall 6/8 of the period. The brush is a plain bristle and the soap is Sunlight, which would have been typical of the time and place. The soldiers would have stropped their razors on anything that fell to hand, probably canvas or a leather belt. The only aftershave was water, sea or otherwise.

    The backdrop seen here is an extract from my Great Uncle's service records showing him being wounded at Gallipolli - he survived that battle but died on the Somme in France 2 years later.

    Default ANZAC DAY 25-4-15

    An early morning shave to commemorate ANZAC day.

    As a New Zealander waking up under an Aussie sun I am touched to think of the incredible bonds forged between our countries in times of war and the sacrifices made by so many to ensure our way of life.

    Lest we forget.

    ANZAC Day 2015

    Razor: James Johnson Cast Steel 'Dulce' (From well before WW1 but this razor would have seen it all)
    Brush: SRP LE 2011 Thäter
    Lather: Trumper's Sandalwood

    I jumped the gun a bit but I managed to find time today and come back to post here.

    The jacket belongs to my dad from his days in the Army.

    Razor: Bengall Spike Point 6/8"
    Lather: Mama Bear's Cedar
    The scuttle is a generic one. I'm sure some of the officers would have had the luxury of shaving with hot water, not like the boys in the trenches.
