Thanked: 9Shower
Grandpa's pine tar soap, Kiehl's Close Shavers Brushless cream, Crabtree & Evelyn Nomad soap
Burma Shave brush (my favorite of late)
Tony Miller 3" hanging strop
7/8 WKC honed by me
Le CHef Gourmet bowl
Ice cubes
Nivea A/S
Decided to try Grandpa's pine tar soap as the box said it's been used for shaving since the late 1800s. Hm, maybe with softer water it would work ok, but in my case foam was not nice (and this with boar, if I had used badger it would have been worse).
After almost 1 full pass with inferior results, decided to switch to Kiehl's close shavers shaving cream. Talk about a POS product... I bought it at Neiman Marcus; I guess these guys don't really know what they are recommending. I know it's brushless and not supposed to foam, but the end result was just poor lubricity.
Had to go back to C&E Nomad. Love the smell but could skip the sting. It was clear that this shave is not one of the ones I'll look back at with fond memories. Warm foam in the end was a bit of a reward. I have this system: fill the sink with hot water, put the LCG bowl in the water, work lather up, leave brush inside and close the lid. Lather and brush stay warm and this is quite pleasant.
Razor honed by my was stellar on hand hair and HHTs but, compared to razors I have from Joe and Bill, shaving sharpness is worse. Nevertheless, I managed to nick myself 2 times (no biggies) and completed the shave with almost 0 razor burn, which I consider an accomplishment. Interpret this to mean I am getting better with the angles.
Followed shave with some ice cubes on my face (after washing) - I have come to love this, very refreshing. Then some Nivea Sensitive skin A/S balm. Cheap but very good on my skin, and almost no scent. Still have not found it's equivalent in high-end aftershaves. At present, can't work up the courage to use Bulgari and Gucci aftershaves immediately after the straight as the alcohol might prove too much But this might change, as zero burn (if I can get it consistently) should make alcohol a non-issue
No pre-shave oils and styptic pencil this time.
Pretty satisfied with myself overall, and learned a lot (don't use Grandpa's pine tar and Kiehl's)
Cheers
