    Tuesday

My new razor turned up in the mail last night; a nice De Pews 4/8 to 5/8 wedge. I polished it up a little with some 1200 wet and dry and polished the scales a little too. I honed it on the Norton 4k/8k and the Shapton 16k, doing about 40 circles on the 4 with slurry, and then two aggressive pyramids, finishing with 20 laps on the Shapton. This morning’s shave was not good. I‘ll hone it again tonight.

Interesting razor this. Normally I use a three finger grip; index and second finger either side of the scales, but the long tail makes using two fingers on the tail SO comfortable you can’t NOT use that grip. Even though it’s not yet really shave ready (though I did complete the shave) it was nice to use.

It’s interesting that the profile of mine seems different to others I’ve seen; for one it’s a near wedge (maybe ¼ ground?), second the toe is a really spiky French point (others I’ve seen are rounder; maybe it was honed/shaped to be like this) and thirdly it has no logo on the blade (I guess it may have been polished off, or could it be earlier versions had no logo?).

I wonder what the term of manufacture was and if there were different versions? I did find the patent documentation which shows a rounder toe and a less square heel, which suggests to me this razor was wider in its youth (the opposite of me).

I want to polish this razor a bit more by hand. Maybe with some wet and dry maybe some metal polish or jewellers’ rouge. I think I’ll also sand the scales, however I think maybe originally the horn scales weren’t as highly polished as some pictures I’ve seen of ‘restored’ De Pews. Highly polished horn does look nice, though, mine has a slight ‘grain’. Also, the ends of the scales near the pivot are worn to a grey colour; could these areas be buffed/polished to be shiny I wonder.

I’m very happy to be the new caretaker of this razor, thanks to Yohann, and am amazed to think of its age. I wonder when they were actually made after the patent was registered?

    So, back to the hones!

    Razor: De Pews
    Pre Shave: Proraso
    Überlather : Crabtree and Evelyn Nomad/O Melhor/Glycerine
    After Shave: Clubman
