Contribute or Be Quiet?
Gents,
I truly enjoy this forum. I don't have much time for restoring razors, and frankly, I suck at honing, but I feel that I can contribute effectively in some ways. Having said that, I mod at two DE forums. Frequently, I am asked to test razor blades. Well, you can't shave over and over and over on the same day, so that means I use a DE much more that I use a straight. So, my question is, is anyone offended if I post in the SOTD forum with a DE? I'm good with the answer either way, but I do realize that this is a STRAIGHT razor forum!

Randy, I have no issues with hearing about DEs as well. Even though I'm strictly straight at the moment, I keep my mind open. I even suggested having an "Other Types" forum for DEs, Rolls', Injectors etc. but that does not seem like it will happen.

Thanks for the vote. Since this is a straight razor forum, and there are a couple of very well run DE forums, I can see why the DE thing hasn't happened. However, I am curious as to how many members do use a DE during the week . As far as I'm concerned, this is Lynn's house, and it is his decision. He has provided this wonderful place for straight razor shaving, and has my respect for that. And it is out of respect for Lynn that I post this poll. Besides, he's a pretty decent guy!

I don't know about B&B but there are no prohibitions about discussing straights on SMF that I'm aware of. I try to chime in there from time to time but my ratio of posts SRP to SMF is about 15:1. Tony gave me a razor (thanks Tony) and Ed gave me some Merkur/Personna blades (thanks Ed) but as I didn't get much out of the experience as opposed to SE shaves(*), I passed them on to a person whose need was greater than mine. I will be getting one again though, just to have another weapon in the arsenal lol.
(*) The DE shaves were clean, smooth and irritation free but the experience was lacking (from MY perspective -- different strokes for different folks)

DE shaving is not quite the "ritual" that straight shaving is. B&B has a straight razor forum, but it is under utilized. Joel has recently taken a renewed interest in getting it moving. I don't use a straight as often as I like, but that is my decision. I could "pass" on testing the blades, but there are a lot of cartridge razor shavers who would never consider using a straight that I can help convert to a DE.

Ironically I have more DE converts than straight converts (only one partial as he was already curious about going straight lol). DEs will still give you a closer, less irritating shave and waste less material than cartridge razors.
My main reasons for preferring straights over DEs are:
1) I control my blades' performance with my own work.
2) I just love the way an SE blade moves over my face
3) A rebellion against the throw-away society

BTW I do not often read SOTD entries so I do not have strong feelings about it either way.

Thanked: 8RT, post away my man. I'm not snobbish enough to care and welcome your insight. After all I vaguely remember a challenge linked to vintage fountain pens
When I'm in a rush, overslept etc... I resort to my DE. No way I'm going to hurry with a straight.

Your a member, and this is Shave of the Day. Even if you grab an electric its your call. Some may enjoy knowing there are DE alternatives and why you want to use a DE on some days, and not others. I happen to know one honemiester who uses a DE whenever he travels. Now that I get up at 4:30 for work, I'm leaning towards a DE all week, sad but true.

Hmm... I voted for SER only (the only one to do so thus far).
My reason for this, as you stated, is that I have other forums with a huge user/knowledge base to tap; this includes SOTD. I don't see a reason to have to post across multiple forums with the exact same information. I'm don't understand why people aren't willing to simply surf over to another site to see the content that they want.
