A Tale of Friendship
Hi all, Sunday's face feast was as follows:
8/8 Westenton & Son Stub tail
Cella, Col. Conk, VDH shavings all whipped up together
24mm Whipped dog pure badger
Old Spice
Cuba Gold
Today's tale is one of Friendship. My buddy John scored a few razors doing the antique store route this week. Exchanging emails about his finds led to discovering that some of his scores were quite valuable razors. We discussed some restoration techniques and what I had been doing with some of my ebay saves. I mentioned that I was going to ask for a band sander for my upcoming birthday. John asked what sander I had in mind. I pointed out the tool I was setting my sites on, one that uses 1" x 30" bands as they are inexpensive and come in a huge variety of grits.
So this afternoon early, my dogs alerted me to the fact that we had a visitor, and who should it be but my friend John and his lovely wife. Now for a mental picture.. I had just finished shaving minutes before (the above mentioned shave) and my wife was still lazing around the house in her nightclothes, being as Sunday is her lazy day. As soon as we realized that there were visitors arriving, the mad scramble on my wifes part began. She instantly disappeared into the nether regions of the house, leaving me to greet our guests. After a super fast shower, and a healthy dosing with perfumes and powders, she re-appeared to participate,,
First thing apparent was John was hauling his razor bag and a big box in his arms. As I greeted them, I realized he was carrying a new-in-the-box band sander. Astonished I opened the door for them and got them into the house. Here was the deal:
John told me he worked on the barter system, and if I would restore 2 razors for him, he would call it even for the band sander. (Included in the deal were 2 additional grits of bands, 80 & 120 grit). Out came the razor bag, and what should be there but three razors needing restoration and scales. I examined each one as they came out of the bag, and to my suprise, there was a Wester Bro's, a DD GoldEdge and an unusual 7/8" Columbia Cutlery in some very ornate scales. All were in 'fair' condition, but the DD was sans scales completely and boasting a slight frown.
I asked what was with 3 razors, when he only asked for 2 restores? He responded that the Wester Bro's was for me to keep. We had been discussing that razor for the better part of 6 months, and it is a little small for his tastes, so he was giving it to me as a gift as well.
Needless to say, jaw dropped and all, I was hard put to find adequate words to thank him for his generosity. After stammering for a bit, and then getting the story behind his finds, I gratefully accepted his offer, and will begin restoring his razors for him tomorrow.
What would life be without our Friends??? I am very blessed to have several, several I have never met face to face too!! (one being my razor buddy Roy). Just when I was starting to feel at my lowest, having been unemployed for some time now, this was quite the boost to my attitude. I just hope I can deliver and give him back something worth his money and effort. I realize that none of these things can truly repay his friendship, but giving something back and showing you are a friend is worth more than any money or items can ever be.
Just had to share that story with my razor buddies. What a guy, eh??
Enjoy the upcoming week brothers!!
M-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --

Thanked: 88Sunday Morning
Razor: 6/8 Gotta 120
Prep: Bald Frog Eucalyptus Balm
Brush: Whipped Dogblack badger
Soap: CO Bigelow shave cream
A/S: Nivea for Men balm
Result: A great shave
The last of the razors I got in trade. This one was the roughest, but might be the best of them now that's it's cleaned up. Just as big and round as my Hart Steel, but extra hollow. I really like this one.

The rose scales make this blade look less serious than actually it's, a 7/8 full hollow that it could be compared to a filarmonica with no shame

Thanked: 485Monday
Nice shave with the De Pews this morning. And when I say ‘nice’ I mean excellent. And when I say ‘Excellent’ I mean superb. And when I say ‘suburb’ I mean, umm, better than superb… The edge is almost there, just a bee’s dick away from really good. I think I’ll use it and only it for a week and see how it develops. Edges do develop, don’ t they? I find they do, anyway. There’s a curve. Straight off the hone and/or stropping is not the best. The best might be one, two or three shaves later. At least that’s my experience.
(beyond this point)
So, back at work today after the hols to be told (regrettably) that I must return to the Public Sector position from whence I came; I’ve been away gallivanting for almost three years in different positions. THAT sucks. Also the wiff was out so that means I’m stuck home with a narky 14 year old son who takes over the lounge room big screen TV to play Skyrim (whilst wearing a Charlotte Hornet’s baseball; cap (thankfully not on backwards (nested brackets there, and now more), just a sec, where am I with the brackets? Here’s a couple, do with them what you will (). As I was saying before brackets rudely interrupted… baseball cap NOT on backwards, but one of THOSE attitudes, tea from a can for me and cheap wine.
At least I have my new boots to polish; I even spit polished them a bit last night.
The Trafalgar aftershave went well with the new boots. It was all very English Edwardian Clerk type look today; Edwardian hand painted dog cufflinks too, I might add. A fountain pen, but not a dip pen, though I did write a workout for my son yesterday using a dip pen. He thought it odd. I bet it’s the first EVER Chest/Shoulders Back/Biceps routine written in a dip pen. Maybe it’s worth something? Only eBay would know; eBay knows the price of everything…Yahoo! knows a lot, too, but can’t spell, and keeps telling me depressing things on the front page. I really don’t want to know about people burying their new born babies alive. Why on earth should I know that? It’s depressing, the world’s pretty much insane as far as I can tell; at least that part that Yahoo! seems to want to tell me about. And why does Maddona keep showing us her breasts? I really think she should change her name; it’s false advertising really, as far as I can see, someone should challenge her on that…”Um, ‘scuse me, Maddona, sorry for interrupting your very intense workout, but, um, well, me and the rest of the world don’t think that name really FITS; we never did really, what about changing it; you could run a competition! I’m sure you’ll get lots of suggestions. I could offer one if you like?”
Silly woman.

Thanked: 485Oh well now THAT is a great photo! Truly. Have you been away for a while? I was thinking about guys I don't bump into here much any more this morning.
I know this sounds really weird, but that's lovely looking wood. I love a nice pile or fire wood that I've split, but we don't have birch or whatever that is here to burn; and gum (Eucalypt) is so different looking stacked for the fire...It's funny how the most simple things in different countries to one's own can strike one as so interesting...
At least for me. Your Mileage May Vary...
So great to see him looking so well; he's got your hair colour? Kids when their little are little sponges, they soak up every little bit of knowledge. They also like to participate. I get annoyed when people DO things for kids (even like getting them a drink) when they should be participating in the act with them. Bailey LOVES going to the fridge to get the milk, or helping me put coffee in my mocca pot...
I'm just blown away by your photos; I love the bokeh and the whole style of them. If that flashed up on the screen at the cinema and they sold them in the lobby I'd get one of everything...Last edited by carlmaloschneider; 07-16-2012 at 10:07 AM.

07-16-2012, 09:54 AM #30Le Grelot Maxterpiece | Jabonman Vetiver/Mandarin/Litsea Cubeba | Auslesse | Vetiver de Carven
Ahhhh, vetiver! What an amazing way to start the work week. The Jabonman whipped up into a luxuriously pillowy lather, which let this little Grelot works its magic. After two passes, I was CBS and my face feels incredible. I really needed no AS, but couldn't resist. After I wrapped things up, there was only one choice for a fragrance - more vetiver. And the Carven worked a peach! What a day!Last edited by LegalBeagle; 07-16-2012 at 09:57 AM.
