Thanked: 1184I mostly use square points and mostly keep an eye on the point. I do have a space between the ear and where the hair goes so I never have to get that close to the ear. In fact I have a lot of space between the ears too.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

First and Foremost, it would help if you could expand your profile to show where you are in this wide world. There just might be hands on help just down the street. So Please Include your location.
Secondly as my good friend Tc has said, this age old art take patience and practice. They go hand in hand. If you don't have patience then you will fail. However if you can proceed with patience and practice you will find this older but better way of shaving very rewarding.
It's a long strange trip, but it's well worth the journey!

Thanked: 0I've been shaving with a de and a se a long long time. I am very proficient. I just don't like the shave which is why I'm making the jump to a straight hoping that after conquering technique it will improve my shaves. De was better than the cart, se was better than the de. but of course YMMV.

Thanked: 0It's not that I don't like SEs, damaskene shaves fairly well and smooth. But it is not the best shave I can get. The barber uses a straight and it gives me the best shave I've ever had. I want the best.

With practice you can shave like your barber does you but your barber has a distinct advantage. What I mean is he can manipulate the razor angles and direction far easier than you can on yourself. I know barbers that can shave clients wonderfully but admit they have difficulty with their own faces. Its harder and takes practice. Totally doable and time has to be invested. And of couse its fun.
Don't drink and shave!

I agree--to a point and that point is that a barber is looking from the Outside and is Looking In. We on the other side are on the Inside Looking Out. The barber has so much more control by being on the outside.
I don't hold a razor in what is considered a 'Traditional Manner' in that the toe of the razor Never faces my ear while shaving the sideburns area. The heel Always is toward the ear.
Now, under the jawline yes the toe may face toward the ear, but the ear isn't in the way.
I shave with only my dominate hand and I get very nice one pass shaves. When I first started out I had to teach myself and I found that having my hand in front of my face while attempting to shave didn't make any sense so I came up with my 'System' and it works well.
Boy Howdy am I going to catch some flak from this. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.
