Thread: Enlighten me on the Futur

Just ordered a Merkur Futur. I've used DE's for years now, but never had an adjustable. Liked the look of the Futur and needed a new DE for an upcoming trip.
Got the thing for $20 (gift cert) so if I don't like it no biggy.

If you have one or used one give me your thoughts.

The ex-gf really liked hers when she decided to put down the straight razors. Really grippy handle, hefty weight, and adjustable. However, I believe she kept it on a fairly aggressive setting and never changed it from there. It's certainly a quality DE.

Jerry make sure you get some sample blade packs, every razor and blade combo is different for different people. The razor is a decent razor so no problems there. Tc

Ordered a sample with the razor...and I'm looking to get one from West Coast. Went to order from SRD, but the shipping was like $10 on a $20 sampler pack. The wife will probably flip out if I order a new Strop just to get free shipping on blades (I thought about it though haha).

Bought a Futur for my wife. She started shaving with a Gillette Adjustable so i thought this DE would be like old times for her.

She like it fine until she tried my new Merkur Slant. I now have a Futur and she has the Slant.

I got a sample pack of DE blades when I bought the Futur. I liked the Nacet the best. It was the most comfortable. The Nacet is a Gillette blade made in Russia or so I am told.

I have had mine for over a year & use it normally a couple times a week when in a hurry...a straight will "straighten you out" when you try to rush one.

I learned that for me and my face, I keep it on the 1 setting with Feather and Astra Green blades (my choice of quality de blades).

It's a heavy razor and you really have to watch the pressure...don't use any.

I shave in the shower with mine, so I have to pay attention to hanging on to it with slick fingers. I think I liked my adjustable fatboy by Gillette a little better, but that's like comparing two quality straights. You got yourself a quality modern DE razor no matter what.

What are your guys favorite blades?

I've got a sampler on the way and will be ordering another from West Coast...I might add some individual packs in that order based off of suggestions from you guys. I've tried a few, but hey if I'm ordering a sampler I might as well add a pack or two based off others experiences. Never know when shared preferences will arise.

Polsilver Super Iridium and Permasharp Super are my favorite blades. Also up there are Gillette Silver Blue and Astra Green.

Tried the Futur this morning. Forgot the bliss that can come from a DE. Getting use to the head and wt is an adjustment, but for the most part had a really excellent shave.
