I have both the Muhle R89 Grande and the R41 Grande. I love the heavyweight handles. They are both nice razors. Since the R89 is moderate on the aggression scale, I use it with very sharp DE blades. The R41 is definitely more aggressive with greater face feel, but it is by no means a "beast" unless you have poor technique. I have very sensitive skin and have no trouble using the razor with mid-sharp blades. The R41 is so efficient that the I feel no need to use the very sharpest blades, even with my tough beard.

I have not tried the earlier version of the R41. I understand that it was far more aggressive than the current version.

I have one of the earliest version and it's a very fine shaver, it resembles a SR shave feel, however it still uses those damned DE blades I'm not a big fan of.
Also, they're not as scary as some DE shavers make them out to be, at least not for a SR kinda guy. I like the aggressiveness they shave with and IIRC your SR experience about shaving angles really comes into play with that razor, it's a fine DE razor.

I learned to shave with a straight razor before I purchased an R41. The techniques I learned as an SR shaver make using the R41 easy. Likewise, I can see that the transition from a R41 to a straight would be far more straightforward than makijng the transition from a cartridge razor or mild DE.

I think I'm going to go ahead and pick up an R41 head. Even if I probably won't use it much compared with my straights it'll still make for a nice backup or change of pace. Or, I end up giving the set to someone thinking about getting into wet shaving. Proselytizing goes with wet shaving almost as well as a nice brush.
