Are all blades created equal?
I'm looking at a DE and thought I'd ask everyone's opinion on what their favorite blade is for their DE? If you have one, why?
Thanks
Mike

Thanked: 1903This has been discussed a few times before. Searches like this one often help: personna +merkur +feather site:straightrazorplace.com - Google Search
Anyhow: Israeli Personna, Merkur Platinum, Derby. In that order. I use Merkur DEs exclusively (if that matters), and like the gentleness of the Israeli Personna blades. When using my open comb DE, the Merkur Platinum give an extra kick, as they are far more aggressive.Last edited by BeBerlin; 10-17-2009 at 05:57 AM.

Have you chosen your razor yet?
No, all blades are not created equal.
Gillette Super Thins - first class blade, good for 4/5 shaves. Great price.
Astra Super Platinums - Great shaves - good price
Feathers - first class blade.
I recommend that you get yourself a blade sample pack from connaught shaving or westcoast shavers. Blades that are good some are not for others.

Thanked: 137So are Derby blades decent? Found a local supplier that sells them for a rather decent price, but have also found a sample pack containing Crystal Platinum Chrome, Feather Hi-Stainless, Astra Superior Platinum, Shark Super Chrome, Zorrik Super Stainless, Derby Extra, and Lord Super Stainless blades. I'm leaning towards the sampler, but if some of those brands are known to be rubbish I may go for the local supplier instead.

The Merkur HD - 34c is a great razor. It could b e the first & last you ever get.
If you do not want to spend that kind of money, there are alot of very good Gillette razors on ebay.

Are All Blades Created Equal?
Gentlemen,
I can never say enough good things about the Edwin Jagger 89L DE with Feather or Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge (yellow pack) blades.
Regards,
Obie

I don't have a favorite. I like 7 a.ms (bangledeshi), dorco (korean), supermax (indian), israeli (no-name, the best) and various American (U.S.) brands in the 5-10 packs. Israeli have been the best, ironic given the straight razor scene and the elimination of the jewish people. Can't get rid of enough of 'em, ya know! (same goes for facial hair..) supermax & dorco were 12.00 USD per 100, 7am were 15 USD per 100 and no-name Israeli were 18.00 USD per 100. Walmart, K-mart and Walgreens were priced completely non-relationally (comparatively) to their value by the blade, so I will not condescend to the economic feasinability of the 100 packs available through eBetray (that name given for unhoned str8 razors).
They were basically all the same to me, as far as aggresiveness of shave goes, but the 18 cent per blade (Israeli) were justifiably better, but only by a few cents and for one or two shaves more per blade. By my estimation it is hard to go wrong, from my personal experiences, for the one hundred packs I've purchased. ymMv

When I did shave with a DE the Merkur slant was my go to razor with either Gillette Swedes or Feathers. I consider those to be the sharpest with the Gillette Swedes being the smoothest.
Derbys, Israeli Personnas, Merkurs are all decent and milder blades IME. Not bad just not as good as the Gillette or the Feather on my phizzog. YMMV.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
