Thread: Cleaning your DE

FWIW: When I first picked up my safety razors they were fairly dirty. I soaked them in water with Borax and Grease Lightning (multi-purpose cleaner) and with a little toothbrushing I was able to quickly clean them up and get them looking great. On the one I've settled into using the most I just blast it with hot water while shaving to rinse out soap scum and whiskers, and leave it at that. After the shave I open it up and set it out to dry. If it ever builds up with scum I'll probably just wipe it with a towel...break out the toothbrush only if needed.

After every shave I loosen the shave head a bit and I rinse the razor thoroughly with hot water, gently dry it with a cloth and then blow dry it (cold air feature) with an old hair dryer, and park it in the rack with the blade in it.

(For my stainless steel Feather and Pils razors, although I use Feather, Super Iridium and Gillette yellow pack blades for them, all stainless steel, I sometimes take the blade out after each shave.)

I also change blades every three shaves. At that time, I gently scrub the razor with soap and a soft tooth brush, rinse it with hot water, give it a 10-minute bath in Barbicide, rinse it again with hot water, dry it with a cloth and then the hair dryer (cold air feature again) and park it in the rack until the next shave.

I've been using my Dad's 1960 Fat Boy occasionally and I'm getting another one of those new fangled toofer brushes to use on the DE.

I just use my oral B lectrick toof brush and some toof paste meself. Give the razor a good old teeth clean on blade changeovers. I use my DE not too frequently though as I prefer my CT's.

If mine gets a bit grubby I use a bit of white vinegar and bicarb for 10 mins or so and then hit it with the wife's toothbrush

I always empty the blade and wipe down DE razors for their next use, almost all manufacturers recomend storing the razor without the blade. Some Twist to open razors come with a small comb to assist in cleaning.
