Thread: Cleaning your DE

Just got my first DE in and its a Merkur 34C HD. My question is how on earth do you keep these things clean?

I usually use my sink to give the razor a good "swish" while shaving after each pass. I will just clean it when I change the blade after 3 uses or so to prevent excessive buildup.
If it is a razor that I bought used, I will use an old toothbrush and some soapy water on it, and then soak it in my sink with a mix of Lysol disinfectant, and hot water for 10 minutes or so.

With each blade change, give the razor a rub with a micro-fibre cloth - focus attention to under the head plate and the support plate - this will keep the soap scum down.

Once a week use a general purpose bathroom cleaner spray - I use CIF. In the US you could use 'Scrubbing Bubbles'.

Spray the razor with the cleaner, let it sit for about 10 - 30 minutes, then scrub gently with an old toothbrush and rinse with hot water.

You should be good to go

NOTE : Keep away from 'lime scale remover' types of cleaners as these have phosphoric acid in them.

I use a denture brush and scrubbing bubbles. The denture brush is bigger then a toothbrush and has firmer bristles then a toothbrush, and has a pointed side to really get into the cracks and crevices.

On the advise of my dentist, I got one of those Oral B battery operated toothbrushes. When he mentioned it I had visions of a 50 dollar montrosity that would take up half the bathroom, but when I got to the supermarket I saw one when passing by... it's a toothbrush, with a battery... for $6.99!

I've been using my Dad's 1960 Fat Boy occasionally and I'm getting another one of those new fangled toofer brushes to use on the DE.

I just use hot water and a corner of paper towel, works fine.

When I change the blade on my de I usually fill the bathroom sink with some warm water and baby shampoo and place the components of the disassembled razor in the warm water/baby shampoo solution.

Let it soak for a minute or two, then scrub the razor's components with an old, soft toothbrush.

Finally, I rinse the components of the razor under the faucet and dry them with a soft cloth or towel before inserting a brand new blade and reassembling the razor.

After doing the above, my razor looks and shaves good as new.

+1 on Scrubbing Bubbles. When I used safety razors extensively, after the Sunday shave I'd toss all the razors I had used during the week in the sink and spray them down with Scrubbing Bubbles, when the bubbles were done I'd run a toothbrush around them. Every other week or so I'd dry them off and give them the once over with Never Dull (metal polish)

I use barbicide or a like product from another brand. Mix it was 1/3 water and let the razor soak while you forget about it. Otherwise, I use the aforementioned battery powered toothbrush. Works like a charm.

To tell you the truth if you're talking your own razor and not some eboy special you just got I really don't worry much about it. Every now and then when it's obvious I'll just use some bathroom cleaner and an old toothbrush and it's as good as new.
