I like the Derby or Persona, but I find that it really depends on your razor. Some blades will feel like garbage in one razor, but like silk in another. Maybe that's overstating, but I think you get the picture. I suggest you get a sample pack and try a couple of different types. Try each one at least a couple of times, if not more before you give up, unless it's really uncomfortable. Even then, don't get rid of the rest, just hang on until later time and try again. Just a suggestion. I found some of the blades I felt were so so at first, but I liked later on.

Well the reason I ask is, instead of just ordering a random sampler, I think I'd like to build my own sampler on one of the websites that has good prices on 5 packs. It seems that most samplers offer 2 or 3 of the type that get recommended on here a lot, and then they throw in a bunch of stuff nobody ever mentions. So I thought I'd take a poll and built a sampler from that. We really out to build a sticky on blades, eh?

Best price I've found so far for "build your own" sampler pack.
Anybody have a cheaper source than Razor Blades and More Co. | For all your blades and razor needs! ?

Ron,
You've been given ample information on blades to get you started. From here on a little bit of research on your own will give you the best prices for your budget. Good luck.

The problem is there are so many choices. Remember, different blades seem to mate well with different razors and that changes from person to person so the blade and razor combo that Obie loves may simply not work for you. In the end you just have to experiment.

Indeed, what works for me might not work for another. That is obvious. Also, the type of double edge razor used must be considered. That is obvious, too. Here is where personal research comes in. Once the double edge shaver has the basic information and tools with which to work, he or she needs to follow through with personal research. That is the only way to find out what blade works well for one and what does not.

Thanked: 485It was Obie who I got my DE from, a lovely Mühle R 89. Obie did me the great favour of not only offering really good advice and tips, but also including a sample set of blades. Two of those included were excellent for me, with this razor, they are Astras and the Gillette 7 O'Clock "SharpEdge" in the yellow packs he mentions. I didn't feel the Derby blades matched those two for smoothness. I value smoothness over crazy/silly sharpness...

Dorcos are a very mild blade, so if they work without tugging, most blades on the market will probably be fine. Since you like a mild blade, you might try Shark or LORD blades, or, perhaps "Crystal" blades from Personna. What youv'e selected should be a good start, though. The Gillettes are both fairly sharp blades, btw, so you'll get an idea if you like sharper blades or not from them.

Thanked: 220I get really good results with the Feather blades, but as mentioned, the Wilkinson Sword blades are pretty good for the price as well.
