Thread: Still nicking

Ok so I am almost a month into using a straight and doing well.
The DE however is a different story. I get close shaves but I have yet
to shave without nicking myself. I am now on my third blade and I like it best so far but still with the nicks. I know about face stretching, using no pressure and holding the grip low to let the razor do the work.

Not really sure what else to do or try. Right now I am using the Astra Super Platinums.

I've had the same experience. I get far fewer nicks with a straight than I do with my DEs. I rarely use them anymore.

You didn't say what razor you are using. It might not be for you or there may be an issue with it or it may be adjusted improperly (if it has adjustments).

If that's not the issue then even though you say you know about how to use a DE the evidence says you aren't doing it. Nicks with a DE usually is a user issue.

I don't know about you but I am much more careful using a straight than a DE for some reason. I tend to watch things a little closer too and go slower. If I show a DE as much respect as a straight then I tend not to nick myself with a DE. Not saying that is the case but it is for me.

Same here. I always cut myself with a DE and almost never with a straight. Therefore, by default, I use only the straight now.

Start going full time on the straight

I do use the straight mostly. I got the DE for when time does not permit.

I noticed when I tried the Astra Platinum blades they are sharper and I nicked myself as well till I got used to them and now I prefer them as my blade. But, how is your angle? Make sure you put the head of the de on your face then rock it down until you feel the blade on your face. Also make sure that you are changing the blade angle with each curve and contour of your face. This picture may help with a visual.

Also you could try using a pre shave or pre shave oil. If you are going ATG this could be causing the nicks and cuts. Id suggest WTG then XTG until you get better then you can master ATG.

I know that we're generally talking double edge safety razors, but for those times when you're in a hurry and don't want to nick yourself, try a Schick injector single-edge razor. Close shave, no nicks
