You failed to mention the age of your son and whether he has any straight razor or wet shaving experience.
I started with the Feather Artist Club SS non-folding type but would recommend the folding type for beginners because the grips are the same as for western straights and because it has scales to protect the blade between shaves. I'd recommend the Pro bades. This Feather SS is an excellent razor and will give close comfortable shaves. The blades are very sharp but the SS version has a slightly rounded bottom that creates a moving V-notch groove which presses down the skin slightly ahead of the blade, while exposing and cutting the hair. This makes for a gentler safer shave with less chance for cuts if you keep proper angles with feather light touch. I had no experience with straights ever in my life. I happily used the Feather SS for 6 months before my first regular straight shave at 68 yrs old. So I'm sure your son will love your wonderful Christmas gift. You might want to make up a shave kit with a pack of blades, a good soap and brush if he doesn't have such shaving supplies. Merry Christmas to all-I'm glad I learned straight shaving even though it was after I retired. Never too late to enjoy something so pleasant.
