Thanked: 2Thinking about giving this a try
I have been reading on here the last couple of days about the Feather system and I am thinking about taking the plunge. A couple of questions before I get going. Money is always a factor so I am looking at the Feather SS Folder but then I saw the KAI Captain and it seems very close to the Feather DX. I cannot afford the DX so which would better the Captain or the SS or does it really matter?
Thanks for the help.

Check out the Sam Seong and the CJB at 1/3 the price and, in my users' opinion, work just as well at about 1/3rd the price. Get a more expensive one later if you wish, I haven't and gave away my Feather to a new guy.
They are al;most exact copies of the high priced brands.
Google search with both brands shown and some info and articles about them.
Have fun!

PS. I liked the Feather "Pro Guard" blades and am now using the Feather "Pro" regular blades with no problem.
Kai also has blades of good repute.Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

The SS is a smoother shave because of the rounded point.
If you're coming from a straight use the pro guards and then move up. It's an easier transition and you will reduce the "Am I bleeding?" factor.
Those Sam Seongs are nice but I haven't found one that is in a SR style only the kamisori style. It took a little fitness for me to be comfortable with it. But you can pick one up for $45 shipping included on ebay sometimes. They don't have the same rounded edge.
Haven't tried the kai. They all use feather blades and in the end that's what you really trying.....Let us know what you get and your experience after.

Thanked: 8Hi Mate, I can only speak for the Feather Artist SS Folding and the CJB which I had scales fitted. Both are very good the feather has the edge on quality but on shaving hard to tell them apart. There are some well priced Feathers on the Japan eBay site. I agree as above the CJB is a good starting point. As for the blades it a case of seeing which suits you best I like the Feather pro without the guard.

Thanked: 2Thanks guys for the help. I was really wanting to try the folder 1st but I may give the Kamisori a go. I can't find a CJB or Sam Seong in a folding style. I might post a WTB add and see whats out there. I will keep you posted on what happens. My everyday shaver right now is a Merkur Progress with Astra Plat. blades. I know how to shave with a straight and still do on occasion but the maintenance level is just too high with 2 small children and life in general. This just looks like a great compromise plus I haven't tried any new hardware in over a year so the RAD is itching.

Agree on taking the first step with a CJB. The build quality is not nearly as nice as any of the Feather but the shave experience is the same. If you find the system works for you, seek out the older Dx version. Pricey, yes. But a much nicer experience IMHO. The build is awesome. I have and use both the folding and non-folding Dx as well as the new SS and the SS leaves me cold.

Thanked: 3The Kai Captain stand is the only one I kept after trying The Kai Excelia and the RG & SS models by Feather.
It's a beautiful piece.

Thanked: 2I've only tried the Feather SS, but it is one razor that is pretty much guaranteed to give me a great shave with minimal effort. Bonus - the blades appear to go on forever (well at least couple of weeks for me). Just keep your concentration when using though, mine gave me a spectacular cut on the cheekbone when I first got it!

Thanked: 2For anybody interested I looked on Ebay Japan like Stevie said and I came across this:
Feather Professional Artist Club SS Straight Razor Black New | eBay
I contacted the seller and he is accepting $75.00 best offer and then will give discount on blades. Includes shipping. I ordered one. Will keep you posted after I get it.
Thanks again for the help.
