Default Feather AC DX feels like cheating

OK I know it's only one shave, but if I had to describe using the DX(folding) in one word I would say "effortless". I had about four days worth of beard and this baby mowed it down without so much as a snag. Effortless. I did my normal four pass shave plus a fools pass. Effortless. Even my goatee area which is especially tough. Effortless. No cuts, no weapers, alum block burn almost non-existant. Minimal aftershave burn.

I don't mean to belittle anyone who has had trouble with this system. I certainly was careful, took it slow and payed attention. I've had very few straight razor shaves like that. Hopefully that will changes as my honing/stropping abilities improve.

Again, I know it is only my first shave with it, but so far I am very happy with this purchase.

BTW I used the proffessional super blades.

I use my Feather DX regularly, being fully aware that the DX takes no prisoners - be that a 4-day growth, or skin if used incorrectly.

Nothing at all wrong with using the AC system now and then. IF someone doesn't have the time to go through the morning stropping ritual et al, I'd rather go the AC route than just using a DE blade. If you're looking for a close and effortless shave, you can always try one of the guarded blades. Takes a concerted effort to cut yourself with those and they still get you shaved cleanly.

No, it's not like a real straight then, but it's still not like using a superspeed.

I'm very happy with it so far. Much more like a straight than my dovo shavette. The dovo did get me off to a good start though. Don't think I'll be trying the pro guards anytime soon as the super pros are working out great for me, but thanks for the inpt. I actually do enjoy using DE and SE razors, but not as much as I do straights.

As nice as the feather is (and I do think I will get a great deal of use out of it) it still isn't a straight. I just need to make some time to maintain them. Most need to be at least touched up. I did re-hone my goldedge recently with a couple of nice shaves resulting. Now just need to do the rest of them.

Congrats!! You have obviously learned the art of touch.....light, very light......feather. The Super Pros are a little aggressive for me, but the regular professionals, for me, are right on the money (pun intended) for aggressiveness and cost...$12.99 for 20 blades. They're very close to a regular straight, provided the regular straight is at the high end of shave ready.

I really like the Feather AC DX.

Owned all the Feathers and sold them. Recently had a Kai Captain and just got another Feather DX folding as a present. After shaving with it I sold the Kai. Just doesn't get any better then the DX. Use in maybe once a week or when traveling. Great weight and feel.

I've used the dx almost exclusively(some DE and SE for variety) this past year. I really want to get back to straights, but the feather is so easy and convenient and I've had a lot going on in the last fifteen months or so. Changed jobs. Wife pregnant with twins so she had me on lockdown trying to button up house projects. Twins were born on September 11, three and a half months premature. They've done exceptionaly well and if everything goes according to plan they will come home tomorrow. I should have lots of spare time then right?

I do plan to get back to straights. Just have to make the time. I'm taking about three weeks of to help my wife with the kids. Hopefully I will have time to tune up at least one during that time and work from there.

Anyway I'm coming up on two years of wet shaving and haven't use a cartridge since very early on. Earlier this year I gave my left over cartridges and handles to my Dad. He was quite happy. I've tried to get him interested in wet shaving, but without much success. He did enjoy looking at my collection though and telling me which ones he had used. He really liked the RR and the auto strop, having never seen those before.

    Merry Christmas!

    P. S. I forgot to mention I turned forty earlier this year.

Congrats on the twins!! Thoughts, hopes, and prayers that they continue to grow healthy and happy!! Enjoy them, they'll be grown and leaving home in about "2 months" it seems like.....from experience.

If you're using an AC/DX, you're certainly using a straight. Maybe not the same maintenance, i.e. honing, stroping, etc., but as to technique...it's a razor that demands good technique or you're going to bleed. If your technique is good on a DX, then your technique is probably above average for a traditional straight. You shouldn't have any problems.

and a Very Merry Christmas to you and the family!!!

    Best Regards,

    Gentlemen,

The Feather AC DX is a remarkable razor in every way. The fit and finish are noteworthy. The shave is silky smooth. But the Feather is also a sassy razor and requires respect. I use the Professional blades. That I can also use the same blades in my Mongoose makes the Feather even a bigger winner.
