Thanked: 3Change in my Stropping?
Evening Gents,
I have be stropping and shaving with my Dovo for months now and with my newly aquired Shefield wedge for a month.
Now tonight i grab the wedge strop it and its tugging and pulling something rotten. So i must have rolled the edge, is that possible on a wedge? So i put it down grab my dovo full hollow strop it up and same thing dull and tugging. So in one night is it possible that i've rolled 2 edges and how did I manage that?
I'm not stropping any different as far as I can tell. Will I have to send them both back to Neil at the strop shop to be rehoned now i've recked the edge?
Thanks in advance.

Thanked: 4826I think if I had only two razors I would be more inclined to use them one at a time to avoid not having a razor because they both need honing. And I have messed up two edges in two days before, so it is possible.

i think people are quick to blame improper stropping. i realise you have been shaving a while now but are you sure you are shaving at a shallow enough angle? how well has it been going so far with regards to closeness of shave/razorburn etc?

Thanked: 3The wedge i use with the spine almost completely flat against my face and the Dovo since about 2 months in i would say i've got the angle cracked.
I did ponder has my shaving ability done this and thought of the strop as the last shave with both razors was perfect and this time as soon as I made my first stroke it tugged and pulled.
Re irritation and burn I get none since around 20 - 30 shaves in (2 months). Smoothness i get as smooth as my 4 month olds bum and no noticeable stubble for 36 hours ish.
That said I have had razorburn more recently but I think that was from trying to do a chin touch up with just water.Last edited by ivocoj1; 09-09-2013 at 10:21 PM.

You're not the only one to have that issue happen to them. hard to say what happened. We all have off days.

Thanked: 1587One thing you can be sure of: something you have done has dulled those two blades. The usual culprits are stropping and/or shaving technique. Both seem to be about equally likely, based on what people have reported over the years.
I guess your task will be to narrow it down if you can to which is the most likely reason for you. For example, if you have stropped previously and all has been well, then the odds shift away from stropping toward technique.
It is often these self-assessment exercises after a failure/issue that teach us more than the successes do.

Thanked: 3Thanks for the info and advice gents.
So courses of action? I'm guessing if I've rolled the edge it has to be honed or can it be stropped back?

Thanked: 270I really think that unless you did something different while stropping the wedge, you didn't roll the edge. You have been stropping for months and this issue hasn't come up until now.
What I would do is invest in a cheap 100X microscope that runs on either AAA batteries or watch batteries. I'm the type of guy the feels better about what I do if I can see the results. The microscope will pick up microchips or any lingering debris on the blade, and verify that the edge is uniform.
Here is one like I have. Amazon.com: Carson Micro Max Lighted Microscope: Sports & Outdoors
It will take a little practice to learn to hold it steady but it really does a great job.

+1 on Jimbo! I assure you it's not a rolled edge because that's a myth, like Big Foot. Lot of people say it exists but no proof.
Strop could be dirty but what about your cleaning procedure, water quality, creme or soap change? State of your skin. If you're new to SR shaving, are you using after shave? I recently stared with AS (after 2 years with a straight) and after 2-3 weeks my shaves were awful. Didn't realize the stuff was drying my skin and EVERYTHING tugged and hurt due to irritation.
