BBS with a what? A gold dollar? Oh yeah :)
Just a quick post that I finally got my gold dollar sharp enough to give me a BBS shave just now! 2 WTG then 2 ATG followed by a clear water touch up and I went back to the techniques and angles I used with my shavette and success! even sweeter when you take a cheapo razor and grind it and hone it. I may just have to try to rescale it. It's a great day to Faceturbate!

Thanked: 1195I don't think anyone here said that a GD won't give you a good shave - the work it takes to get it shave ready is the contentious issue.
Anyway congrats and happy shaving

Yeah no problem. I was just referencing the challenge and success of the gold dollar in my title.

Thanked: 6I have a GD that I shave with every so often and it gives me a really close and great shave due to how heavy they are, they just glide over your face. I had to do some work on it to get it sharp enough to shave with, a lot of grinding but got it shave ready. I like it so much that I ordered 4 more model 66's from China just to have spares. You can have a lot of fun with them reshaping them to fit your needs and if you mess one up they only cost 4 bucks each. You can buy them from bay pretty cheap also. Try one you will like it!!

I was wondering if anyone with a GD noticed whether or not they hold an edge as well as other razors once they get them shaving satisfactory?

Thanked: 14My first shave with a western straight was with a 6/8 top heavy Gold Dollar 208 honed by a local honemeister here in the Phoenix area. Like Bookdoctor says it is a heavy razor because of it's rather thick spine. But the full hollow grind gives a very thin blade near the cutting edge. That blade thinness combined with the quality of the hardened steel makes this razor a type of singing razor because it emits a high pitched "ping" when the tip is plucked with a fingernail. This razor also emits a distintive tone during stropping, not as loud as but similiar to my other extra hollow singing razors. My 6/8 Dovo Bismarck blade, which gives a close shave, doesn't sing like my crude Gold Dollar does. My Gold Dollar 208 has won a place in my rotation because of it's quality steel, holds a good edge, gives close shaves and it's heavy crudeness reminds me of the primitive yet delicate act of wielding a hunk of sharp steel against one's face to turn a mundane necessary task into a Zen experience to be savored.
