Thanked: 6Can You Get A Straight Razor Too Sharp?
I sharpened my sr using a king 1000/6000 to set the bevel and a 12000 Chinese stone, finished with 1u film with wet paper underneath film. This sr pop hair off arm and was really sharp. First shave with it cut beard really well but when the razor came to my chin it seemed to drag and almost stop. I continued and I knew the razor was sharper then usual and it finally let go and big gusher on front of chin. I don't know if it was a mental thing or maybe the razor was too sharp and dug into the skin. I know what you are thinking, had razor at wrong angle coming down the chin, but the razor was at proper angle. Lather was wet with proper pre shave prep. Any thoughts?

Thanked: 4827There are many could have beens. Every now and then we all blow it. Hope it isn't too deep. Watch that spot on subsequent shaves because if you knock the scabs off repeatedly it will be more apt to scar. It is often the hand and not the razor.

Lateral movement or if a spike point you lifted the heel... & no a razor cannot be too sharp, it's a razor after all.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 3226The chin area has some of the toughest whiskers and if the blade is stopping/hesitating there it is not too sharp. Hope you heel well.

Cuts don't result from razors that are too sharp. They result from razors that are not sharp enough and some manipulation with them is required to pull off a shave. That manipulation is what causes the cuts.

Your post title brings to mind other great questions...Can your date for the evening be too good looking? Is my salary too high?
My worst cuts have been from one of my sharpest razors that also happens to be a spike, Sharp to the toe. A moments inattention will reward you with blood. Was it a spike? From your write up, you admit distraction...The easy road is rarely rewarding.

Thanked: 61It depends on the person... If I hone with synthetics the razor gets too sharp and irritates my face... But coticules leave the edge smoother..., NO Irritation

Thanked: 6Yes I was distracted by thinking that my razor was extra sharp and to be extra careful, maybe I was to careful. I will sharpen a razor ending with my Chinese 12000 only and see if that makes a difference. I have a gold dollar that I use sometimes and it shaves close with no problems at all, sounds like I should be using it instead of my wade and butcher. Could the grind of the razor cause problems when you finish with 1u film?

Thanked: 61I've sharpened everything on lapping film and it's capable putting a shave ready edge on everything... For smiling wedges you just have to pay attention to the contact point and make sure the whole edge is being lapped by film when rocking that smile through your stroke
