Thread: Extra Hollow vs Hollow Grind

I have to agree, it has to be that perfect balance between rigidity and flexibility. My favorite singing razor is my Puma Special 89 in 6/8. It has a very thin edge, but has a very thick and hefty spine. A wonderful balance and my best shaver.

Thanked: 1195I would say that extra hollows require some skill and/or finesse to achieve the best results. Not to say that you need to be an eighth degree black belt at SR shaving to use one, it's all down to practice.
My first razor was a Dubl Duck Satin Edge, and as we know DD made blades that truly qualify as extra hollow. That's what I learned with and it was a few months before I tried another (less hollowed) razor so I simply got used to it. I wouldn't recommend that to everyone but sometimes jumping in the deep end will make you learn very quickly lol

Thanked: 14I learned straight shaving by using a Feather Artist Club SS kamisori razor loaded with their Pro blades for 6 months before my first western straight shave. Those Feather super sharp blades taught me to use a very light touch and proper angles. Now I use a mixture of full and extra hollow with an occasional quarter hollow and near wedge razors. The singing razors give very close shaves and are more fun to shave and strop because they really do emit their high pitched rings.

yep,i have seen this razors on e.bay .I have a kamisori hollow razor but have never tried it ,its an 11/16 if I remember right.Still for a beginner I need a 5/8 or 6/8" blade to start with.SEEMS to me that the ralf aust razor is becoming a better razor than devo.maybe if I get a refund from the irs I will get one

Hollow grind is heavy and not so wasy to use 1/2 hollow is good for beginners because the blade work easy(hard jamming or strange bends)
Extra hollow is diffult to manage for flexibility of blade and edge...but the sound is fantastic!!!"Consider well the seed that gave your birth: you were not made to lives as brutes, but to following virtue and knoweledge"
