I changed my honing about 2 years ago (I went up in final grit polishing) and haven't had a nick since. Really amazing. Unless you count the occasional day I used a DE, I nick myself everytime I use a DE.

Thanked: 1yesterday! ok its only my third straight shave. But come on, while looking at my upper lip trying to get the right stretch and brining the razor in I clonked it right on the top of my nose which left a nice 1/4" horizontal red line for all to see, man do I feel dumb.

All these guys who say they haven't cut themselves in so many years or months. Don't believe it, no way.
I ain't going to touch this question because if I do I'll probably be in the emergency room tomorrow morning. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 0Namdnas- how about trying some Neosporin? It seems to work on regular scrapes. Also I found it I can keep the cut "together", sometimes it closes and doesn't turn dark red.
Heliguy- don't feel bad- I actually managed to cut my EAR the other day- just touched the blade against the cartilage and boom... One second of inattention is a killer.

Draxe, I may give it a shot. I'm not fond of oil on my face during the day, but I'm also not fond of clearly defined red lines either...

Uh, that would be, well, yesterday. Nicks seem for me to be one of the learning curve things, as in, the more familiar I am with that particular part of the shave; the less likely I am to cut. Make sense? In other words, I almost never cut myself on a WTG pass these days. I gave myself a nice visible nick under the nose on a XTG pass yesterday, a perfectly vertical line right in the center. And I always give myself three or four little point weepers under my neck on an ATG pass, the kind that bleed a little, then I hit ‘em with the styptic, and afterward all I have is a little dot that looks like someone took a hypodermic needle to my neck. I really haven’t mastered control of the motions on the ATG yet; I don’t do the ATG pass more than a few times a week, and those are just for practice (Someday BBS might be significant, after all).

Two days ago. I seem to get a bit careless about once every month to six weeks...concentration gets back to where it should be, and then the cycle begins over again.
The lack of certainty is why I DON'T shave commando .
Cheers,
Ed

Thanked: 1Yesterday
I tend to have a cut most shaves. I put it down to the sharpness (shouldn't that read bluntness?) of my blades. I'm trying to bring a second razor up to sharpness atm, and I'm still not too happy with the sharpness of my main. Hopefully these nicks will go away when the blades get sharper.
But then again, when I do nick myself, I wear the cut like a badge of honour. All my colleagues and friends know I'm a straight razor shaver, and aren't surprised when I show up with yet ^another^ vertical line above the lip, or under the ear, etc.
Still, I enjoy the shave (I'm also in the commando team!)
