1 Pass Shave (atg only).
After reading this thread I got an idea.
http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...rl-can-do.html
A single pass shave ATG. It reduces your strokes by a large factor. And provided you have a sharp razor it should work.
So I've been testing it.
My last 2 shaves have been ATG only, single passes, With a touch up on water.
The razors used so far have been a:
Muller Bismarck 6/8 full hollow using Body shop maca root and a
Muller Bismarck 7/8 German extra hollow on ingram cream (uk cheapo menthol).
Both shaves have been as good as my regular 3 pass shave. With no irritation.
Both razors were freshly honed for the test.
1K king, 5, 8, 12K Naniwa SS. Thuringian Light green, Thuringian yellow green slurry on neutral hone.
100 laps on leather.
I plan to do more shaves like this with the rest of my razors to see if this has just been a fluke. So far no problems.
The next razors on the block will be:
Muller bismarck 5/8 full hollow.
Dovo bismarck 6/8
Joseph rodgers 7/8 near wedge
Jospeph Elliot 6/8 near wedge
And the real tests:
Astra (no brand) 5/8 full hollow
Artemis 7/8 Full hollow RSO.
I'll keep updating this when I shave to see how this progresses.Real name, Blake

A daily one pass shave works fine for me. It doesn't even have to be ATG.
Of course doing a one pass WTG shave as I sometimes do, isn't going to give me BBS - but generally speaking, its close enough for me Mon - Fri.David

I shaved like that for years with a Gillette Good News twin blade disposable. I still do sometimes with a Merkur or Ikon Slant if I am running late some mornings. With a straight I prefer to do two passes but not infrequently do one with a combination of strokes. I re-read the SRP rules and I could find anything against that.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2027Most of you guys shave every day, thats not a shave, most of the vids you see here are guys taking off a simple one day growth.
Pce of cake,no pull. no razor burn, one pass shave will get you BBS every day because you are not really doing much of anything.
I shave every 3-4 days, thats a shave with alot of whiskers to be removed.
I love some of the shaving vids posted by SRP members, but show me a real beard growth and a real shave, show me the hairCAUTION

Thanked: 4826My regular shave is one against and one across, it does the job. I shave every day and a half to two days.

I'm on a 2-3 day shave.
The 6/8 bismarck took off 4 days growth.
My hair is not very course but there is a fair amount of it.
When I think about it it shouldn't matter if you do the ATG pass on long or short hair. If you do an ATG pass it still has to cut the same amount of hair at the same density for the blade. The shank length is never seen by the blade as it only sees the hair directly in front of the cutting edge.
The only real difference is on short hair the blade will skip at 0 resistance, With longer hair it's going to treetop.Real name, Blake

Gentlemen,
I avoid a one-pass shave against the grain only, because that's asking for ingrown hairs, if not now, perhaps in the future, unless your skin is made of thick hide. Shaving against the grain is a predominant cause of ingrown hairs, regardless of proper preparation.
One-pass shaves and I are old friends. Mine, however, have been mostly with the grain with some across the grain and against the grain strokes for touch-ups. My razors are silky sharp, but I still prefer to remove the bulk of the stubble with the grain before attempting other strokes.
Yes, perhaps some gentlemen might get away with shaving in one pass against the grain, but for most of us, that's asking for trouble.

This old guy has dirty fingernails and a nice one-pass-with-a-jawline-twist technique. I do this sometimes but, no, not ATG.
