Thanked: 19Question
So, how important do you think it is that one watch Lynn's 3 1/2 hour DVDs on straight shaving before one's first straight shave?

Thanked: 4826To be honest I have never watched Lynn's video. I have watched videos, after the fact. Some people just like to do things the hard way. I do think it is a good idea to watch at least a couple in order to get a grasp of what is going on. Blade angle and skin stretching is pretty important, if you have never seen a good example of that then watch several videos and focus on seeing those things. If you find a video with someone with the same shape face as you have, that is doing full shaves that is the cats pajamas.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

I watched lots of vids, and read a pile of stuff before I gave it my first try.... you don't want to start blind, but there is a saturation point too where you just have to give it a go, and then start asking questions

I watched Lynn's video long ago. I will admit, the first part instilled RAD. . The best parts to me were his demos on barber's hones, Norton Pyramid and especially his stropping/shaving demo. Old-school and proper. I decided that THIS was the advise I should take. Had I not seen it, I would not have gone along as smoothly as I did on my own. Having met him in person, Lynn is the salt of the earth. His mannerisms in the video and care taken to give good advise are unmistakable. I had a copy which has been to umpteen countries and half the states of the union. It languishes in AU now, but will surely come back! Must-see! Real-deal! JMHO
"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Thanked: 19How important is my first shave? Well, important enough to ask whether the more experienced think I should watch the DVD first, at least. I have watched at least a one or two dozen videos, including many of Lynn's. I assume they are not the same as the ones on the DVD, but they have all been very helpful. I have also watched GeoFatboy on YouTube, who does have a face shape somewhat similar to mine (poor devil...). And several others. But all of these comments are helpful. I'm not rushing, but I am eager, having spent some time researching here and elsewhere. I'm a longtime DE guy, ready to try the SE.

Watching a video of a straight shave is what got me into this hobby.
If you have the opportunity to watch Lynn's video before your first shave I'd highly recommend it and take Hirlau's advice, just watch the shave part, set's it all out very clearly in a step by step fashion.
