I am still super new to this as well but have a little advice. You will cut yourself... not just once. You will get frustrated and want to give up.... not just once. This is a journey and if you have to take breaks every now and again that is okay. Just don't give up if it's something you really want to do.

Thanked: 270My first straight came from Larry as well and he sends helpful suggestions with each new razor. If you approach it with an attitude of enjoyment and something you really want to do you can't fail. It's hard to believe that I have been straight shaving for almost five years and I'm still excited about it.

Thanked: 2Congrats on your purchase!!! I leaned about Whipped Dog (Larry) about two weeks ago, which I would have know about him sooner. Keep us posted, I may get a razor from him.

Congrats on your first SR!
As a fellow Newbie, I would like to offer a few thoughts on what helped me in the beginning of my straight razor journey. First of all, I would like to tell you, as a few others already have, to take your time and to use a gentile hand while shaving. But most importantly, I want you to know how important it is to read up on this site before you start. I have been able to completely avoid nicks and cuts in all of my shaves so far, and I attribute this almost solely to the excessive amount of research that I put in before I began; although, I'm sure quite a bit of luck was also involved. Anyway, I hope this helps out a bit, and welcome to the ranks!
