    Default Bevel re-set & hone

Well it was my first attempt to bevel setting and honing after purchasing a set of stones and having a dead in the water razor from my stupidity. I watched Lynn and Glen on YouTube over and over with their videos on "how to" bevel set and hone! I decided since no meet was in the near future in my area I had to try this. I proceeded slowly and did a bevel set as Lynn showed and used the tape method of the spine as Glen did in a video.

I have to admit the circle method and holding the razor right with spine and blade flat at all times tedious to learn and do but I went slow. I then performed the honing the same way to the "T" while going slow like a turtle on a summers day until I get use to this.

I had a 4-5 day beard and the razor while still not a Lynn or Glen honed cut through the hair so much easier and without all the irritation as in the past. Still needs to be refined just a tad obviously but will come with practice and meets with those who can expand on what I have watched with Lynn and Glen on YT.

Man it felt great to have the razor go through hair much easier!

Nice one Micahel 70, I have read about your troubles and it is good to hear that you are on your way. It is a very satisfying feeling shaving with your own edge, give us the make and progression of your stones. Also tell us what you finished on and how many laps you did of linen and leather on the strop.

Good one - I just did the same thing, I've done three now and about to start the 4th.

One thing I've learned, every razor is different, and will present it's own challenges, the various methods are great guidelines, but you have to just get on the stoneS and do what you need to do to get it right. It was a great feeling to get it right, and you've got the perfect and final test that matters - does it shave well.

    Congrats!

I'm right behind you guys. I have done 2 (actually the same one twice) and have yet to test shave the second try. The first one was NOT a success; hence try #2. Will shave in the morning and see, and if not good will try #3 tomorrow.

I am in no way good....just marginal but I figured I had to jump in. So I did. It needed more fefining but for a first attempt I will call it a decent success for sure. I need and will attend a local meet to get one of the knowledgable here to go over it again to perfect it and give me alot of guidance. Good luck Phrank and you are 3 ahead of me so I know your finding it much easier than I did. Lynn and Glen made it look so easy!

Crackers I finished on the Norton 8k since that is all I have right now. I need to get a 12k Naniwa for finishing off the blade better. I would get a Shapton but man those stones are high dollar. Plus I am a total nube here so I figure for now a Naniwa will do. I bought the Norton obviously for the price to start out with plus I figure alot began with a Norton until they felt good about sharpening. Now as far as the final stropping............I was so anxious to shave I forgot to strop & linen prior, so it makes me wonder if the shave would have been even better if I had???

I will be a bit more settled and not anxious next time so it will be better I hope!

Good luck Harold......I hope it is as sharp as a classic Samurai sword for you. Are you using the Norton stones or something else????

Michael70 nice one, just remember to wipe the blade off properly between each progression. You do not want contaminants on your stones and definitely not on your strop, the edge will calm down a bit after you strop.

I think that is where I messed up. I did the initial shave as indicated since it was shave ready from the seller who honed it and got it ready. Then I used the pasted strops to set up for next time. I read somewhere on the net and I know you can't believe all you read that sometimes using paste with create a buildup and a convex bevel that will need to be re-set sometimes. I make have pasted heavy in other words.

I need to fine tune the Dovo now that I have a Shapton 12000 in my possession! I think the bevel is okay but will have a old pro look at it next meet locally to make sure.

I have a RA coming tomorrow or today maybe and it will be ready for shaving so I will give that sweetie a whirl so I know what it should be like. I assume Lynn from SRD hones all razors that go out the door one purchases???

Can't wait. Thanks for the input Rusen!
