I just shaved with my 5/8 ralf aust, I don't think you could go wrong with one. It is what I started on and even after an incredible foray into the depths of rad it's still one of my favorites. The only thing I would have changed, in hindsight, is I would have gotten a 6/8 as its my favorite size. Either way an SRD starter kit is good way to get off on the right foot.

Thanked: 4827I have seen some pretty incredible deals on our classifieds. I would suggest if there is nothing there that tickles you just wait. There is new listings all the time, although the crazy deals seem to go fairly quickly. If you are looking for new there are quite a few to choose from and I would suggest looking at who is selling them as close as what is being sold. There are a few vendors that are known for good edges, and that is what you want.

Thanked: 4if you decide to go the new route +1 on the Ralf Aust. It's a really really nice razor. Personally I would go with a 6/8 round tip because you have a little more umph to it. The thing with the classified route is being a newbie to wet shaving you are not sure what will work for you. Going the classified route will give you more bang for your buck and let you experiment and try several different razors for the price of a new one so you can find something you really enjoy. My two cents

5/8 Ralf Aust with the black scales for $103 cannot be beat for a persons first! Just my opinion of course.

Thanked: 7Like many here have mentioned, I too jumped into SR shaving with the 5/8 Ralf Aust, followed quickly with the Thiers Issard 5/8. In the past 4 years I've added 5 other razors to these but I still shave with the first two I purchased. Either one is an excellent choice, both need minimal maintenance to keep their edge. They could be your first razor and also the only razor you'll ever need..but good luck with that!

As a fairly new straight razor shaver, I would also like to suggest a round point razor. The square point or even worse the spike point will bite you hard if you are not careful! Not worrying about the point is one less thing on your mind as you get the hang of shaving.

Firstcut, I'd recommend a Boker King Cutter. Good luck with whichever route you take!
