I sort of do what Haim does. It's kind of, a half swallow. Sounds odd, but it works for me. Swallow in front of the mirror and watch your adams apple move. Practice holding the swallow half way through and your apple should stay raised from its usual position.
I shave down to it, then do the half swallow, it rises into the area I've already shaved, then I can shave below it. Give it a try. Good luck.

Thanked: 3One thing I've been experimenting with recently is pushing on the soft structures of my neck laterally (not just the adams apple) to create a flat surface. Imagine someone punching you in the side of the throat. You can apply varying amounts of pressure to create the surface contours that work for you. Give the "throat punch" a try.

Lumberjac,
I prefer comfort over perfect.
Even after all the years of straight shaving, I still cannot get a perfect shave on my neck.
The hair on my neck is a maze of directional growth, mostly shooting from the Adam's apple to the ears. To shave it, therefore, I must come across the neck on each side with the blade horizontal, my hands twisted. It's hard and dangerous. Other parts of my face pose their own challenges.
For the Adam's apple, I hold my swallow for a few seconds, thus flattening the area, and shave the stubble. All done.
Lynn says I have tree trunks for a beard. He is right.
With all this, my neck is never perfect. Sure, I can get a perfect shave with, probably, five passes, but that would result in massive irritation. So in the end, is getting a perfect shave worth the discomfort? Not for me.
Comfort over perfect.
