I like the sexy french tip, for a new straight shaver I would start with a round tip, it is safer and a bit more forgiving, french tip the same. Just my opinion.

A picture of it. ------> 6/8" Rasiermesser mit amerikanischem Kopf

Attachment 233592 It seems the Irish like to call the French point, Irish point. Maybe I said that back words.

Whether it exists or not I am going to call it that :<0)

Thanks for jogging my memory with that link. Yes, the American point/Amerikanishem kopf does exist. This is a poor photo of my Herder 77 Constant stainless steel razor's tip.

At risk of inquiring into something that may be incredibly obvious... is there anywhere that has a good write-up on why each of these points have the names that they do?

I haven't seen any write ups explaining how these points were named. It would be interesting to find out though.

No Idea of how the different points got their name, however a friend in Germany told me that the 'Spike' point that pups was kind enough to show was only manufactured for the American Market.

I would also say that the Square Point is only slightly different from the Spike point as there is a slight radius instead of two angles meeting at a 90 deg which results in a nice little bit to bite you when you momentarily lose your concentration. Yes I speak from experience.

Yes, that would have been my first guess as to how the points got their names being based on regional preferences.

It is the subject of much controversy. In the past, many downright uncivil and argumentative threads existed.

I am proud of this nice discussion!

Ok. So I misspoke. Shoot me. Tip and point, not nose. Got it. Thanks much to all participants. The question however came up because of the confusion on Ralf Aust site.
