Thanked: 7Neck shaving - closeness
I either shave with my str8 or my IBC with feather AC blades. With the feather 2 pass shave wtg is all I need and smooth clean shaven. With the str8 not even close I have to do like 4-6 passes wtg to get it clean and even then it's taking some pressure and irritation. So I have started doing ATG a few times it gets it clean shaven but causes irritation. 2 wtg and 1 ATG. On the cheeks i just do 1 wtg 1 Xtg. XTG I am not able to accomplish on my neck. Opinions ideas anything to help?

Thanked: 220Gotta' ask, is the blade on your straight honed & stropped properly? Could be a possible cause. You should never need any pressure with a straight razor.

Thanked: 7I believe so. I got my blade from whipped dog, and I have a SRD kangaroo strop. I am thinking of ordering a second razor and sending this one out to get rehoned. That pressure only comes on my neck. And only if I maintain going wtg. If I do 2wtg 1atg no problems light touch. Just no matter what I use when I go against the grain I get irritation not always but most times. Be it DE, shavette, sr, evil cartridge anything. And when I do get the irritation it last for days till I rest my face for like 2 days. And being in military makes a bit hard.

The neck. Up AG or down with the grain for me it doesn't matter. There is always some the razor doesn't get. The same with the cheeks and the jaw line. Then when i wash and rinse with cold water apply the alcohol and let dry the beard i felt seems to disappear. These days i go for a good shave and forget about the BBS .

Thanked: 3215Pick up a 60x lighted loupe or a Micro Max 60x100 hand held scope both under $15 and look at the edge.
More than likely you have rolled the edge or micro chipped it stropping. It takes a while to learn to strop to where you are consistently improving the edge.
Your shaving technique will also improve with time and practice.

Thanked: 3228I can't to XTG on my neck so just do a diagonal stroke there and I would also check your edge for sharpness.

You might add some soap for sensitive skin to your arsenal until you get the razor problem ironed out.

Thanked: 0The neck can be problematic, I. Have had the same issues with irritation and the razor not performing as well on this area. Of course, I. Realised that if the blade shaves the cheek well, then it probably isn't the razor but more likely preparation or technique.
I have a tough beard, and dry sensitive skin so it couldn't be much worse. If you are like me then forget ATG shaving. If you have dry skin, keep it regularly moisturised, never shave a face with dry skin, not even 'fatty' soaps such as 'wool fat' or glycerine based creams will help much with a dry face.
Try not washing your face beforehand as it tends to strip away what natural protection is already on the skin.
Two passes WTG on the neck maximum, concentrating on stretching the skin effectively and check your blade angle, it is more difficult to see the angle on the neck.
If you know the blade is good, maybe try a few of the above.
Finally, try gently shaving arm or stomach hair, just a small patch, one easy pass, then leave it for ten mins. If it becomes irritated and/or red, the blade may indeed have a rough edge, I also had this issue and had to smooth it out.
Hope you figure it out soon.
