Thanked: 0I guess it was only a matter of time...
Now that my shaves are finnally getting decent, and the whole experience has become enjoyable, I am finally beginning to relax a bit. Well, I may have relaxed a bit too much, because tonight I had my first shaving accident.
I had just finished my left side and I was looking in the mirror evaluating the job I had done, while at the same time, I was switching my razor between hands. I guess I was a little too focused on my image in the mirror, because during the hand-off I grabbed the blade. Not realizing this, I though, "hmm, that felt funny". Looking down at my finger, it didn't seem so funny. Its odd how a little water spreads out the blood and makes it look worse than it is -- I thought I had hit an artery! There was blood all over my fingers and razor!
A quick dip into the sink cleared up the drama and revealed a cut about a third of an inch long on my index finger, and about an eighth of an inch deep. This was certainly no cut artery, but I was still amazed at how deep the cut was for such little contact with the blade. I had only bearly grabbed it, and I made no sliding motion along the edge. Just a slight pressure against the blade had done this. Amazing.
Its funny how I had come to think of the blade as harmless. Afterall, it took such great effort to keep it sharp enough to pop the hairs off my face. With all the difficulty honing, I had almost come to think of it as dull. Well... its not dull

Funny, I have no problem shaving with my razors... I get the eebee jeebeeies cleaning it and putting it away. I can't afford major cuts on my hands due to my job (pro cook) so I have to take a deep breath to calm myself before I wipe it down. Weird cause I have no such problem with my kitchen knives...
Yup I'm loosing my mind yet again...

Thanked: 9I guess I am a bit ignorant - does a pro chef have assistants (e.g. for chopping and stuff) and just direct the apprentice chefs?
And even if you have a cut - can't these thin gloves be worn to avoid food contamination?
And finally - in this case, I would probably use a thicker towel to wipe off the blade, or maybe even better one of these rubber thingies that Vintage Blades carry and Michael talked about
Just curious

Thanked: 0Not always wise to replace the hanging hair test with the hanging finger test.

Thanks for the reminder vectorcide. I admit that I have been rather successful with my shaving routine and am getting quite comfortable and relaxed. I have my ritual of 2x wtg and 1x atg down to a record 6 minutes. It wouldn't do for me to pull a "Yoda jedi" move and give myself a nasty cut to learn me by. Thanks for the "heads up" even if it was at your expense.

I think most experienced straight users will tell you they suffer more cuts on their hands then their faces. Rmember those axioms of shaving, always know where the razor is in relation to all appendages of the body, especially if you shave commando!
And I can't believe I'm now an official blabbermouth. I think I'm going to get my Iwasaki and commit hari kariNo matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
